English meaning
Fearing death, the gods entered the threefold sacred knowledge. They covered themselves with the metres. Because they covered themselves with these, the metres are called chandas.
Explanation
The threefold knowledge comprises ṛc, Sāman and yajus. Chandas here evokes metrical sacred utterances, not merely an abstract scheme for counting syllables. The text links the name with acchādayan, “they covered,” through a ritual wordplay rather than a modern historical etymology. The narrative will show that this first covering was insufficient.
संदर्भ
ओम् की महिमा बताने वाली कथा में देवता पहले वैदिक मन्त्र और अनुष्ठान को अपनी रक्षा का आश्रय बनाते हैं।
Context
In the story praising OM, the gods first seek protection in Vedic recitation and ritual.
