English meaning
For this reason, even now in this world people call someone who does not give, has no faith, and performs no sacrifice “asuric.” For this is the teaching of the asuras. They prepare a dead person’s body with offerings, clothing, and adornment, thinking that by this they will win the other world.
Explanation
The triad of giving, faith, and sacrifice and the triad of offerings, clothing, and adornment are complete. “Asuric” belongs to an ancient religious polemic, not an assessment of people today who follow other beliefs or do not sacrifice. The editorial does not disparage respect for the dead or any present community’s funeral customs.
Context
The narrator associates Virocana’s interpretation with social conduct and funeral practices.
