English meaning
They said, “Sir, just as we are well adorned, finely clothed, and well groomed, so these two appearances are well adorned, finely clothed, and well groomed.” He said, “This is the self. This is immortal and fearless; this is Brahman.” The two departed with contented hearts.
Explanation
The full threefold description is repeated for the students and their reflections. In the next unit Prajāpati states explicitly that the self has not yet been understood, so this sentence should not be isolated as approval of a bodily-self doctrine.
Context
The students’ initial satisfaction does not establish that their conclusion is final.
