स वा एष आत्मा हृदि तस्यैतदेव निरुक्तꣳ हृद्ययमिति तस्माद्धृदयमहरहर्वा एवंवित्स्वर्गं लोकमेति ॥ ३ ॥

सः वै एषः आत्मा हृदि [अस्ति] । तस्य एतत् एव निरुक्तम्—हृदि अयम् इति; तस्मात् हृदयम् [इति] । एवंवित् अहरहर् वै स्वर्गम् लोकम् एति ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
वह यही आत्मा हृदय में है। इसकी यही शब्द-व्याख्या है: “हृदि अयम्”, अर्थात् “यह हृदय में है”; इसलिए “हृदय” कहा जाता है। ऐसा जानने वाला प्रतिदिन स्वर्गलोक को प्राप्त होता है।
English meaning
This self is in the heart. Its explanatory derivation is “hṛdi ayam,” “this one is in the heart”; hence the name hṛdaya. One who knows in this way goes daily to the heavenly world.
व्याख्या
हृदि-अयम् उपनिषद् की ध्यानपरक निरुक्ति है, आधुनिक ऐतिहासिक भाषाविज्ञान का निष्कर्ष नहीं। स्वर्गलोक को अनुवाद में अलग रखा गया है; उसे बिना टिप्पणी हर स्थान पर ब्रह्मलोक का पर्याय नहीं बनाया गया।
Explanation
Hṛdi-ayam is the Upaniṣad’s contemplative etymology, not a conclusion of modern historical linguistics. The heavenly world is retained as the expression here rather than silently replacing it everywhere with Brahman’s world.
