ऋग्वेदं भगवोऽध्येमि यजुर्वेदँ सामवेदमाथर्वणं चतुर्थमितिहासपुराणं पञ्चमं वेदानां वेदं पित्र्यँ राशिं दैवं निधिं वाकोवाक्यमेकायनं देवविद्यां ब्रह्मविद्यां भूतविद्यां क्षत्रविद्यां नक्षत्रविद्याँ सर्पदेवजनविद्यामेतद्भगवोऽध्येमि ॥ २ ॥

“भगवन्, मैं ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद, सामवेद, चौथे के रूप में आथर्वण, पाँचवें के रूप में इतिहास-पुराण, वेदों का वेद, पितृसम्बन्धी विद्या, राशि अर्थात् गणना, दैव अर्थात् शकुन-विचार, निधि-विज्ञान, वाकोवाक्य अर्थात् तर्क-विवाद, एकायन, देवविद्या, ब्रह्मविद्या, भूतविद्या, क्षत्रविद्या, नक्षत्रविद्या और सर्प-देवजनविद्या पढ़ता और जानता हूँ। भगवन्, यह सब मेरा अध्ययन है।”
English meaning
“Sir, I study the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Ātharvaṇa as the fourth, history and ancient lore as the fifth, the Veda of the Vedas, ancestral lore, calculation, the interpretation of omens, the lore of hidden treasures, reasoning and debate, ekāyana, knowledge of the gods, sacred learning, knowledge of beings, the knowledge of rulership and warfare, knowledge of the stars, and the lore of serpents and divine beings. Sir, this is what I study.”
व्याख्या
इन प्राचीन विद्याओं की सीमाएँ आधुनिक विषयों से ठीक-ठीक नहीं मिलतीं। वेदों का वेद प्रायः व्याकरण या वेद की व्याख्या, और एकायन आचरण या किसी एक मार्ग की विद्या समझा जाता है। यहाँ ब्रह्मविद्या का नाम आना अगले वाक्य में आत्मज्ञान के अभाव को नहीं मिटाता।
Explanation
The boundaries of these ancient disciplines do not map neatly onto modern subjects. “Veda of the Vedas” is often understood as grammar or Vedic interpretation; ekāyana has been associated with conduct or a unified course of teaching. The item called brahmavidyā does not cancel Nārada’s subsequent admission that he lacks self-knowledge.
