English meaning
Kauṣītaki told his son: “I directed my chant to this principal breath alone, and therefore you are my only son. Sing toward the life-faculties in their plurality, with the intention, ‘I shall have many sons.’”
Explanation
The plural prāṇān extends to the group of vital and sensory faculties. Bhūmānam emphasizes their abundance here; it should not automatically import the full teaching of the later Bhūman section. “I shall have many sons” is read as the intention the pupil is to hold. The promised result belongs to ancient ritual expectation, not a guarantee of conception or family size.
Context
The plurality of the sun’s rays is now paralleled by the principal breath and the many vital faculties associated with it.
