English meaning
What people call sattrāyaṇa, a prolonged sacrificial session, is brahmacarya: through brahmacarya one finds protection from the self that is real. What they call mauna, silence, is likewise brahmacarya: through brahmacarya one discovers the self and reflects upon it.
Explanation
Sat-trāṇa and mauna-manana are associations of sound and meaning. The construction sata ātmanaḥ can also suggest protection of the real self; the traditional reading of protection from the self is followed here. Silence is not reduced to merely ceasing to speak.
Context
The reinterpretations of sattrāyaṇa and silence continue the praise of disciplined life.
