English meaning
“That subtle essence: all this has that as its self. That is the real; that is the self. You are that, Śvetaketu.” Śvetaketu said, “Please, sir, make me understand further.” He replied, “So I shall, my dear.”
Explanation
The salt was known through taste even though its lump was not recovered. The comparison thus raises a question about means of understanding. It does not identify salt and self as substances alike in every property.
Context
From salt’s presence, the instruction returns to the unseen basis of self.
