स जातो यावदायुषं जीवति तं प्रेतं दिष्टमितोऽग्नय एव हरन्ति यत एवेतो यतः सम्भूतो भवति ॥ २ ॥

सः जातः यावदायुषम् जीवति । तम् प्रेतम् दिष्टम् इतः अग्नये एव [जनाः] हरन्ति—यतः एव [अग्नेः] इतः [आगतः], यतः सम्भूतः भवति, [तस्मै अग्नये] ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
जन्म लेने के बाद वह अपनी आयु भर जीता है। मर जाने और यहाँ से विदा हो जाने पर उसे अग्नि के पास ही ले जाते हैं, उसी अग्नि की ओर जिससे वह यहाँ आया और जिससे उसका जन्म हुआ था।
English meaning
Once born, he lives for the span of his life. When he has died and departed from here, they carry him to the fire, back to that from which he came here and from which he had arisen.
व्याख्या
अग्नये ले जाना अन्त्येष्टि का सन्दर्भ है। दिष्टम् और पुनरुक्त यतः-वाक्य के पदसम्बन्ध संक्षिप्त हैं; मुख्य आशय अग्नि से उद्भव और अग्नि की ओर वापसी है। यह सभी संस्कृतियों के अन्त्येष्टि-विधान का आदेश नहीं।
Explanation
Being carried to the fire refers to cremation. Diṣṭam and the repeated clauses with yataḥ are compressed; the main movement is emergence from fire and return to it. This is not a prescription for every culture’s funeral practice.
