English meaning
The highest human joy is that of a fully flourishing, wealthy person, lord over others and richly supplied with every human enjoyment. A hundred such human joys equal one joy of the ancestors who have won their worlds. A hundred of those equal one joy of the gandharva world. A hundred gandharva joys equal one joy of the gods who attain divinity through action. A hundred of those equal one joy of gods by birth, and the same belongs to a Veda-knower who is free of wrongdoing and unstruck by desire. A hundred joys of gods by birth equal one joy of Prajapati’s world, and the same belongs to that blameless, desire-unstruck Veda-knower. A hundred Prajapati-world joys equal one joy of the brahma world, and the same belongs to that blameless, desire-unstruck Veda-knower. This is the highest bliss. “This is the brahma world, Your Majesty,” said Yajnavalkya. Janaka replied, “I give you a thousand; teach me further toward liberation.” Yajnavalkya then became apprehensive: “This intelligent king has blocked me at every possible stopping-point.”
Explanation
All seven levels and the three repeated comparisons with the desire-free Veda-knower are retained. The scale is religious rhetoric, not a measurable psychological formula. Yajnavalkya’s apprehension concerns the king’s refusal to let any partial answer end the inquiry.
Context
Even after the hundredfold scale of joy, Janaka presses for the final account of liberation.
