English meaning
Yajnavalkya went to Janaka of Videha, thinking, “I shall not speak.” But on an earlier occasion, when they had discussed the Agnihotra together, Yajnavalkya had offered him a boon. Janaka chose the freedom to ask whatever questions he wished, and Yajnavalkya granted it. The king therefore questioned him first.
Context
A previously granted freedom to question initiates the new dialogue.
Explanation
Yajnavalkya’s intention to remain silent does not cancel Janaka’s earlier boon. Kamaprashna means freely chosen questions, not merely questions about desire.
Passage 24.2
English meaning
Janaka asked, “Yajnavalkya, what is the light of this person?” “The sun, Your Majesty. By the sun’s light the person sits, goes out, acts and returns.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
The inquiry into light begins with external sunlight.
Explanation
Sitting, going, acting and returning represent ordinary activity. They establish the question of what makes experience and action possible.
English meaning
Janaka asked, “When the sun has set, what is the person’s light?” “The moon. By the moon’s light the person sits, goes out, acts and returns.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
Removing sunlight brings a second source of illumination into view.
Explanation
Each question tests the conditions of the preceding answer. Experience remains possible without sunlight; the inquiry is not just a catalogue of celestial lights.
English meaning
Janaka asked, “When both sun and moon have set, what is the person’s light?” “Fire. By fire’s light the person sits, goes out, acts and returns.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
After celestial sources, the inquiry turns to fire nearby.
Explanation
Fire remains an external light, but can be available without sun or moon. The next question removes this source too.
English meaning
Janaka asked, “When sun and moon have set and fire has gone out, what is the person’s light?” “Speech. With speech as light the person sits, goes out, acts and returns. Thus, Your Majesty, even where one cannot distinguish one’s own hand, one moves toward the place from which a voice comes.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
Light now extends from visible illumination to guiding information.
Explanation
A voice can orient someone in darkness. The example moves the discussion toward awareness and knowing, since guidance need not arrive through sight.
English meaning
Janaka asked, “When sun and moon have set, fire is out and speech is silent, what is the person’s light?” “The Self itself. By the Self as light the person sits, goes out, acts and returns.”
Context
With external guides removed, the Self is called the light.
Explanation
Light now indicates the inward presence of knowing, not a physical beam emitted by the Self. The next question asks which Self is meant.
Passage 24.7
English meaning
“Which Self?” “The person formed of awareness among the vital powers, the inner light in the heart. Remaining the same, it moves through both worlds, as though thinking and as though stirring. Entering dream, it passes beyond this world, beyond the forms of death.”
Context
The self-luminous person is introduced through its role in dream.
Explanation
The repeated “as though” is deliberate: the Self is not simply equated with changing mental activity. The source’s add-like marker is editorial apparatus, not a word of the discourse.
Passage 24.8
English meaning
This person, when born and entering into a body, becomes associated with defects and afflictions. Departing in death, it leaves those afflictions behind.
Context
The relation between embodiment and departure is stated before the dream analysis.
Explanation
Papman here includes bodily limitations and afflictions, not only moral wrongdoing. The sentence should not be made to mean that death automatically erases every consequence of action; continuity of action is discussed later.
Passage 24.9
English meaning
This person has two stations: this world and the station of the other world. Dream is the third, an intermediate station. Standing at that junction, it sees both worlds. Taking the approach available to it toward the other world, it sees both afflictions and joys. When it dreams, it takes material from this whole world, itself dismantles and reconstructs it, and dreams by its own radiance, its own light. Here the person is self-luminous.
Context
Dream is described as a junction between worlds and a field of inward construction.
Explanation
Dream draws on waking material while constructing appearances without the same external objects. The other world and its approach belong to the ancient religious account, not a guaranteed method of predicting the future through dreams.
Passage 24.10
English meaning
There are no actual chariots, teams or roads there, yet it creates chariots, teams and roads. There are no joys, delights or great delights there, yet it creates them. There are no pools, lotus ponds or flowing rivers there, yet it creates them, for it is the maker.
Context
Dream-construction is illustrated through travel, pleasure and waterscapes.
Explanation
Each list contrasts absent external objects with present dream appearances. Being the maker refers here to dreaming, not to a claim that one’s private mind manufactures every waking event.
English meaning
On this there are these verses: Subduing the body through sleep, itself unsleeping it looks upon the sleeping powers. Taking their luminous essence, it returns to its station: the golden person, the solitary swan.
Context
The prose account of inner light is now expressed poetically.
Explanation
The swan images the person ranging in experience while the body rests. Shukra here is luminous essence, not semen in this context.
Passage 24.12
English meaning
Ranging through high and low conditions in dream, the luminous person makes many forms: as though delighting with women, as though laughing and enjoying, and as though seeing frightening things.
Context
Dream pleasure and fear are placed within the same process of appearance.
Explanation
The repeated “as though” distinguishes dream enjoyment and fear from corresponding external events. The example involving women reflects the text’s historical male viewpoint.
English meaning
People see its place of play, but no one sees it itself. It is said that a sleeper should not be awakened violently: what this person fails to re-enter becomes difficult to heal. Others say that dream is simply its waking domain, since it sees asleep what it sees awake. Yet here the person is self-luminous. Janaka said, “I give you a thousand. Now teach me further toward liberation.”
Context
Popular views about dreaming are reported before self-luminosity is reaffirmed.
Explanation
The warning about abrupt waking and difficult healing is translated as an ancient medical belief, not current health advice. Shared dream and waking contents do not by themselves settle the argument about awareness.
Passage 24.15
English meaning
After enjoying, ranging and merely seeing good and evil, this person reaches serene rest; it then returns by the reverse course to its former station, dream. Whatever it sees there does not attach to it, for this person is unattached. Janaka said, “That is so, Yajnavalkya. I give you a thousand; now teach me further toward liberation.”
Context
The return from serene rest to dream introduces the Self’s nonattachment.
Explanation
Reading samprasada as deep sleep, the ancient commentary relates enjoyment and ranging to the preceding dream. The translation follows that interpretive sequence rather than claiming object-directed experiences within dreamless rest.
Passage 24.16
English meaning
Having enjoyed and ranged in dream, merely seeing good and evil, it returns by the reverse course to its former station, waking. Whatever it sees there does not attach to it, for this person is unattached. Janaka said, “That is so, Yajnavalkya. I give you a thousand; teach me further toward liberation.”
Context
The sequence now returns from dream to waking.
Explanation
Dream-seeing is distinguished from performing a waking act. The account of the Self’s nonattachment is not permission to erase ethical responsibility.
Passage 24.17
English meaning
As a great fish moves between both banks, the nearer and farther, so this person moves between the two states, dream and waking.
Context
A fish in a river illustrates movement between dream and waking.
Explanation
The fish does not become either bank. Experiencing a state is not the same as being exhausted by it. Purva and apara mark the two sides, not necessarily compass east and west.
Passage 24.19
English meaning
As a hawk or great bird, tired after flying about in the sky, folds its wings and settles to rest, so this person moves toward the state where, asleep, it desires no desire and sees no dream.
Context
The discussion turns to rest beyond dreaming.
Explanation
Folded wings picture the cessation of experiential ranging. The passage is not a technique for deliberately inducing unconsciousness.
English meaning
The channels called Hita are as fine as a hair split into a thousand parts, filled with white, blue, tawny, green and red fluids. When in dream people seem to strike or overcome him, an elephant seems to pursue him, or he seems to fall into a pit, he takes the fears seen in waking as real here through ignorance. But when he thinks himself like a god or king, or thinks “I alone am all this,” that is his highest world.
Context
The passage contrasts dream fear with an expansive sense of self.
Explanation
The coloured channels belong to an ancient subtle-body account, not a modern bodily test. “I am all” points toward philosophical all-selfhood, not personal domination or a clinical assessment of someone’s mental state.
English meaning
This is its form beyond desire, free from affliction and fear. As a person embraced by a beloved woman knows nothing outside or inside, so this person, embraced by the knowing Self, knows nothing outside or inside. This is its form in which desire is fulfilled, the Self is its desire, and desire and grief are absent.
Context
An embrace illustrates rest beyond distinctions of objects.
Explanation
The embrace is an image of affectionate intimacy, not a sexual practice. Fulfilled desire and absence of desire are not contradictory here: where no lack is felt, no drive to fill it remains.
English meaning
Here a father is no father, a mother no mother, worlds no worlds, gods no gods and Vedas no Vedas. Here a thief is no thief, a bhrunahan no bhrunahan, a Chandyala no Chandyala, a Paulkasa no Paulkasa, a renunciant no renunciant and an ascetic no ascetic. This form is untouched by merit and wrongdoing, for at that time it has passed beyond all the heart’s griefs.
Context
In dreamless rest, social, religious and moral identities are not actively differentiated.
Explanation
The suspension of identity does not erase wrongdoing or responsibility in waking life. Chandyala and Paulkasa are historical social categories, not rankings of present human dignity. Bhrunahan is a technical term for grave killing; its literal embryo-killing sense and traditional learned-Brahmin-killing interpretation require lexical distinction.
Passage 24.23
English meaning
When it is said that it does not see, it is still seeing, though not seeing an object. The seer’s capacity for seeing is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to see.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns seeing.
Explanation
The absence of a visible object is not the destruction of the seer; awareness is distinguished from the presence of something visible.
Passage 24.24
English meaning
When it is said that it does not smell, it is still smelling, though not smelling an object. The smeller’s capacity for smelling is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to smell.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns smelling.
Explanation
Lack of an odour-experience is not equated with loss of its knowing ground; the argument extends beyond sight.
Passage 24.25
English meaning
When it is said that it does not taste, it is still tasting, though not tasting an object. The taster’s capacity for tasting is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to taste.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns tasting.
Explanation
Tasting requires a distinct taste-object; it is the absence of such a second object that is at issue in nonduality.
Passage 24.26
English meaning
When it is said that it does not speak, it is still speaking, though not speaking an object. The speaker’s capacity for speaking is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to speak of.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns speaking.
Explanation
There being no distinct thing to speak of is not total absence of the ground of speech. Silence is not reduced to incapacity.
Passage 24.27
English meaning
When it is said that it does not hear, it is still hearing, though not hearing an object. The hearer’s capacity for hearing is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to hear.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns hearing.
Explanation
Inactive hearing and destruction of the hearer are distinguished. This is a philosophical account of sleep, not an audiological test.
Passage 24.28
English meaning
When it is said that it does not think, it is still thinking, though not thinking an object. The thinker’s capacity for thinking is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to think.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns thinking.
Explanation
Absence of an object of thought does not make awareness nothing; object-directed thinking remains distinct from its ground.
Passage 24.29
English meaning
When it is said that it does not touch, it is still touching, though not touching an object. The toucher’s capacity for touching is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to touch.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns touching.
Explanation
Touch seems an especially immediate bodily relation, yet it too requires a second object.
Passage 24.30
English meaning
When it is said that it does not know, it is still knowing, though not knowing an object. The knower’s capacity for knowing is not lost, for it is imperishable. There is no second thing, separate and distinct from it, for it to know.
Context
The nondual-rest argument now concerns knowing.
Explanation
The final unit generalizes the reasoning to knowing: continuity of the knower differs from knowing some particular thing.
Passage 24.31
English meaning
Where there is, as it were, another thing, one sees another, smells another, tastes another, speaks of another, hears another, thinks of another, touches another and knows another.
Context
The eight sensory and mental operations are now gathered into one formula.
Explanation
“As it were” qualifies duality at the level of experience. The condition of the preceding eight arguments is now explicit: object-directed activity involves knower and known as distinct.
English meaning
It is then fluid and undivided, the one seer without a second. “This is the world of brahman, Your Majesty,” Yajnavalkya taught him. This is its highest destination, highest attainment, highest world and highest bliss. Other beings live on a portion of this very bliss.
Context
The nondual conclusion is expressed in the language of bliss and brahman’s world.
Explanation
Salila evokes water’s undivided character, not a claim that the Self is material water. All four descriptions are retained; the next unit develops the measure of bliss.
Passage 24.33
English meaning
The highest human joy is that of a fully flourishing, wealthy person, lord over others and richly supplied with every human enjoyment. A hundred such human joys equal one joy of the ancestors who have won their worlds. A hundred of those equal one joy of the gandharva world. A hundred gandharva joys equal one joy of the gods who attain divinity through action. A hundred of those equal one joy of gods by birth, and the same belongs to a Veda-knower who is free of wrongdoing and unstruck by desire. A hundred joys of gods by birth equal one joy of Prajapati’s world, and the same belongs to that blameless, desire-unstruck Veda-knower. A hundred Prajapati-world joys equal one joy of the brahma world, and the same belongs to that blameless, desire-unstruck Veda-knower. This is the highest bliss. “This is the brahma world, Your Majesty,” said Yajnavalkya. Janaka replied, “I give you a thousand; teach me further toward liberation.” Yajnavalkya then became apprehensive: “This intelligent king has blocked me at every possible stopping-point.”
Context
Even after the hundredfold scale of joy, Janaka presses for the final account of liberation.
Explanation
All seven levels and the three repeated comparisons with the desire-free Veda-knower are retained. The scale is religious rhetoric, not a measurable psychological formula. Yajnavalkya’s apprehension concerns the king’s refusal to let any partial answer end the inquiry.
Passage 24.34
English meaning
As a heavily loaded cart moves creaking, so this embodied self, presided over by the knowing Self, moves with a sound when its breathing rises upward.
Context
The condition near death is compared with a burdened cart.
Explanation
Creaking and upward breathing are part of an ancient description of bodily departure, not modern clinical criteria for death or instructions for a breathing practice.
Passage 24.36
English meaning
When this person becomes frail through old age or illness, then, as a mango, fig or pipal fruit is freed from its attachment, it becomes free of these limbs and returns by the reverse course to its former station, vital life.
Context
Release from bodily limbs is likened to fruit loosening from its attachment.
Explanation
Anima here means wasting or frailty, not the yogic power of becoming minute. The return to vital life belongs to the text’s account of existence, not a reason to withhold care in illness or old age.
English meaning
As officers, guards, charioteers and village chiefs prepare food, drink and lodging for an approaching king, saying “He is coming, he is arriving,” so all beings prepare for one who knows in this way: “This brahman is coming; it is arriving.”
Context
A royal reception illustrates arrival into another condition.
Explanation
Within the departure narrative, the image depicts beings and the arrangement of results of action. The servants’ titles are historical and do not map exactly onto modern administrative jobs.
English meaning
As officers, guards, charioteers and village chiefs gather around a king preparing to depart, so all the vital powers gather around this self at the end, when its breathing rises upward.
Context
After reception, the royal departure image closes the brahmana.
Explanation
The gathering of vital powers anticipates the withdrawal of faculties in the next brahmana. It is a religious account, not an instruction for bodily intervention at the end of life.
Context
A previously granted freedom to question initiates the new dialogue.
