English meaning
This Vaishvanara fire is the one within a person, by which the food that is eaten is cooked or digested. Its sound is the hum heard when both ears are covered. The text says that when a person is about to depart from the body, that sound is no longer heard.
Explanation
Pacyate links cooking and digestion. Vaishvanara offers a traditional image of bodily life as fire. Hearing or failing to hear a sound with the ears covered should not be treated as a test for death; the passage is not a modern medical finding or diagnosis.
Context
Here the contemplation of fire turns from the external sacrifice toward the power that cooks food within the body. An ancient sign of dying is associated with it.
