English meaning
Whoever knows this infant together with its abode, its particular resting place, its post and its tether holds in check seven hostile rivals. This central vital breath is that infant. This body is its abode, this head its particular resting place; breath is its post, and food its tether.
Context
The second brahmana introduces the principal vital breath through the image of a tethered infant.
Explanation
Body and head are the traditional referents supplied for the two demonstratives “this”; the Sanskrit does not separately name them here. The seven rivals are read in relation to the seven sensory openings of the head developed below. Food sustains embodied life like a tether; no physical rope is intended.
Passage 8.2
English meaning
Seven powers that sustain its undiminishing life attend this vital breath. Through the red lines in the eye, Rudra is connected with it; through the moisture in the eye, Parjanya; through the pupil, the sun; through the dark part, fire; and through the white part, Indra. Earth is connected with it through the lower eyelid, and heaven through the upper eyelid. The food of one who knows this does not run out.
Context
The seven sustaining powers are correlated with features of the eye.
Explanation
In the Kanva reading, fire corresponds to the dark part and Indra to the white part; the other recension reverses them. Akshitayah is understood as sustaining powers that prevent depletion. These are contemplative correspondences between deities and the body, not ophthalmology.
English meaning
A verse says: “A cup has its opening below and its base above; within it is placed glory in many forms. Seven seers sit at its rim, and speech, the eighth, communicates with Brahman.” “The cup with its opening below and base above” refers to this head, for it is such an inverted cup. “Glory in many forms is placed within it”: the vital faculties are that many-formed glory; the words refer to them. “Seven seers sit at its rim”: the vital faculties are the seers; the words refer to them. “Speech, the eighth, communicates with Brahman”: speech indeed is the eighth and communicates with Brahman.
Context
The faculties and the head are explained through a riddle-like verse followed by the text’s own prose interpretation.
Explanation
The chamasa is a ritual cup. Its inverted shape evokes the head and its downward-facing openings. The seven seers represent sensory faculties. Speech’s communication with Brahman also evokes sacred utterance and meaning; the seven-and-eight count is not artificially collapsed into the seven named seers of the next passage.
English meaning
These two ears are Gotama and Bharadvaja: this one is Gotama and this one Bharadvaja. These two eyes are Vishvamitra and Jamadagni: this one is Vishvamitra and this one Jamadagni. These two nostrils are Vasishtha and Kashyapa: this one is Vasishtha and this one Kashyapa. Speech is Atri, for food is eaten through the mouth associated with speech. What is called Atri is here explained by the name Atti, “the eater.” One who knows this becomes the eater of all; everything becomes food for that person.
Context
The seer image is developed by assigning seers’ names to paired organs of the head and to speech.
Explanation
Ears, eyes and nostrils are the traditional referents of “these two”; the original does not repeat the organ names. The relation between Atri and Atti is Vedic interpretive wordplay, not modern linguistic etymology. Everything becoming food is an expansive image of experience and nourishment, not advice to eat anything indiscriminately.
