English meaning
Earth is the essence of these beings; water the essence of earth; plants the essence of water; flowers the essence of plants; fruits the essence of flowers; man the essence of fruits; and semen the essence of man.
Context
The brahmana concerning offspring opens with a seven-link chain of essence from the world’s beings to semen.
Explanation
Rasa denotes nourishing essence. The male-centered conclusion belongs to an ancient account of generation, not a hierarchy of human worth or modern physiology.
Passage 46.2
English meaning
Prajapati considered, “Let me fashion a support for this.” He created woman. Having created her, he approached her sexually with the lower organ. The text therefore says that a man should approach a woman in this way. From his own body he raised the forward-pointing “pressing stone,” the penis likened to a Soma-pressing stone, and joined with her through it.
Context
The statement about semen as essence is followed by a creation story presenting woman as its support.
Explanation
Gravan is a Soma-pressing stone used here as a metaphor for the sexual organ. The claim that woman was created for man belongs to this historical text; it is not a substitute for present-day equality or consent.
English meaning
Her genital region is the altar; the hair is the spread sacrificial grass; the skin is the pair of Soma-pressing boards; the two “mushkas” are the fire kindled in the middle [literally “testicles”; the anatomical reference in this description of a woman is difficult]. As extensive a world as belongs to a performer of the Vajapeya sacrifice belongs to this person. One who engages in intercourse knowing this appropriates the merit of these women; when someone engages in intercourse without knowing this, the women take that person’s merit.
Context
Elements of intercourse are mapped onto a sacrificial setting, followed by a claim that merit is transferred according to ritual knowledge.
Explanation
This is a difficult sexual-sacrificial analogy, not a reliable medical description of anatomy. Appropriating a woman’s merit is an assertion within an ancient male-centered ritual economy, not endorsement of exploitation.
Passage 46.4
English meaning
Knowing this, Uddalaka Aruni used to say it. Knowing this, Naka Maudgalya used to say it. Knowing this, Kumaraharita used to say: “Many mortal descendants of brahmanas depart from this world stripped of vigor and merit, because they engage in intercourse without knowing this.” Much semen may also be discharged while asleep or awake.
Context
Three named teachers establish a tradition for the preceding claim. The final sentence introduces the following rite concerning seminal discharge.
Explanation
The assertion of lost vigor and merit magnifies ritual knowledge. It should not be treated as a modern claim that ordinary seminal discharge damages health, or as endorsement of caste privilege.
Passage 46.5
English meaning
The ancient text prescribes touching that semen or speaking a formula over it: “Whatever semen of mine fell on the earth today, whatever reached the plants and whatever reached the waters, I take that semen back. May vigor return to me, radiance return, good fortune return. May Agni and the Dhishnya fires be restored to their proper places.” It then directs taking it with the ring finger and thumb and wiping it between the breasts or between the eyebrows.
Context
The mention of seminal discharge is followed by a formula calling vigor back and a bodily gesture.
Explanation
Earth, plants and water are three possible destinations; vigor, radiance and fortune are three requested returns. This is an ancient rite, not a health procedure to follow.
English meaning
If he sees his own reflection in water, the text gives this invocation: “May radiance, vigor, renown, wealth and merit be in me.” A woman whose clothing bears the mark of menstruation is described as the splendor of women. The text therefore speaks of approaching such a renowned woman and inviting her to sexual union.
Context
The invocation over a reflection turns toward a menstruating woman and the context of procreation.
Explanation
Malodvasas is understood in its old menstrual context, not as a judgment of a woman’s moral impurity. The unequal treatment of agreement and refusal in the following passages is a problem in the historical text, not acceptable contemporary conduct.
Passage 46.7
English meaning
The ancient text says: if the woman does not grant him sexual access, he may try to buy her agreement with a gift or payment. If she still refuses, it tells him to strike her with a stick or his hand and force his way past her refusal for intercourse, saying, “By my vigor and renown I take away your renown.” The text claims that she then becomes without renown. This is a historical prescription of sexual coercion, not endorsed conduct.
Context
This is the refusal passage. Its wording explicitly involves buying agreement, striking and proceeding coercively despite refusal.
Explanation
Rendering atikramet merely as “go ahead” would conceal the sexual coercion of the context. The meaning is explicit and not endorsed. Neither violence nor marriage substitutes for consent. The loss of renown is the text’s punitive assertion.
Passage 46.8
English meaning
If the woman grants him access, the text supplies the words: “By my vigor and renown I place renown in you.” According to the text, both then become renowned.
Context
In contrast to the preceding refusal passage, this one concerns the woman’s agreement.
Explanation
Adadhami, “I place,” contrasts with adade, “I take away.” This imagines a ritual exchange of renown; it does not justify the violent alternative in the preceding passage.
Passage 46.9
English meaning
For a woman whom a man wishes to desire him, the ancient text describes inserting the penis into her, joining mouth to mouth, touching her genital region and reciting: “You arise from every limb; you are born from the heart. You are the essence of the limbs. Make this named woman intoxicated with desire for me, as if pierced by a poisoned arrow.”
Context
After the renown formulas for agreement and refusal comes a formula intended to turn a woman’s desire toward the man.
Explanation
Artham in this context indicates the male sexual organ. Angakashaya addresses the body’s essence, while the poisoned-arrow image evokes overwhelming desire. This ancient desire-controlling rite does not confer a right to override another person’s autonomy or consent.
English meaning
For a woman whom he wishes not to conceive, the ancient text gives the sequence of inserting the penis, joining mouth to mouth, breathing out and then drawing breath in, with the words: “By my vigor and semen I take away your seed.” The text claims that she thereby becomes without generative seed. This is not a verified method of contraception.
Context
This is the first breathing formula, directed in the text against conception. The next passage reverses the sequence.
Explanation
Abhipranya and apanyat are interpreted as outward and inward breathing. The efficacy claim belongs to the historical text, not contemporary medical advice or a guarantee against pregnancy.
Passage 46.11
English meaning
For a woman whom he wishes to conceive, the ancient text gives the sequence of inserting the penis, joining mouth to mouth, drawing breath in and then breathing out, with the words: “By my vigor and semen I place seed in you.” The text claims that she becomes pregnant. This is not a verified method for producing pregnancy.
Context
The aim is now conception, reversing the preceding order of breathing and the contrast between taking and depositing.
Explanation
Garbham, “a pregnancy,” is understood with dadhita from the preceding sentence. The parallel formulas show a ritual relationship, not an established capacity to control reproduction through breathing.
Passage 46.12
English meaning
If a man’s wife has a lover and the husband hates him, the ancient text describes a hostile rite: placing fire in an unfired clay vessel, spreading a reed litter in reverse, and offering ghee-smeared reed tips in the reverse direction. It gives four declarations: “You have offered into my kindled fire; named man, I take your breath and downward breath.” “You have offered into my kindled fire; named man, I take your children and livestock.” “You have offered into my kindled fire; named man, I take your sacrificial benefits and good deeds.” “You have offered into my kindled fire; named man, I take your hope and expectation.” The text claims that anyone cursed by a brahmana who knows this departs this world without vigor or merit. It therefore warns against seeking amorous play with the wife of such a Vedic scholar, since even such a knower may become an enemy.
Context
After the conception formulas comes a curse against a marital rival. Four offerings share the same structure but name different things to be taken away.
Explanation
The image of the wife as the husband’s fire and the claim of a curse’s power belong to ancient patriarchal sacrificial language. They are presented historically, not as approval of jealousy, violence, curses or ownership of a person.
Passage 46.13
English meaning
When his wife begins menstruating, the ancient rule says that for three days she should not drink from a bronze vessel, should wear a new, unworn garment, and should not be touched by a vrishala man or a vrishali woman. At the end of three nights, after bathing, she is to be set to pounding rice.
Context
Household rules for menstruation introduce the food rites concerning desired offspring.
Explanation
Vrishala and vrishali are old caste-marked terms for people assigned a low social status. The prohibition on contact should be understood as historical discrimination, not a present-day judgment of impurity about a person or menstruation. This is not health advice.
Passage 46.14
English meaning
The ancient text says: for one who wishes, “May my son be born fair in complexion, recite one Veda and live a full lifespan,” the couple should have rice cooked in milk and eat it with ghee. The text claims that they will be able to produce such a son.
Context
This is the first of five food-and-desire formulas associated with a child’s characteristics.
Explanation
Complexion, Vedic recitation and longevity are three separate wishes. The claim that food determines them is an ancient ritual belief, not nutritional science or endorsement of a hierarchy of skin colors.
Passage 46.15
English meaning
For one who wishes, “May my son be born tawny in complexion and brown-eyed, recite two Vedas and live a full lifespan,” the ancient text tells the couple to have rice prepared with curd and eat it with ghee. It claims that they will be able to produce such a son.
Context
The second formula changes the desired coloring and specifies recitation of two Vedas.
Explanation
Kapila and pingala are related color words; assigning pingala to the eyes is interpretive. This is neither a modern judgment of caste or color nor a reliable claim that curd determines a child’s traits.
Passage 46.16
English meaning
For one who wishes, “May my son be born dark in complexion and red-eyed, recite three Vedas and live a full lifespan,” the ancient text tells the couple to have rice cooked in water and eat it with ghee. It claims that they will be able to produce such a son.
Context
The third formula names three Vedas and an explicit eye-color adjective.
Explanation
Lohitaksha explicitly means red-eyed, while udaudana is rice cooked in water. This is the text’s wish-formula, not a ranking of appearances or advice for changing inherited traits through food.
Passage 46.17
English meaning
For one who wishes, “May my daughter be born learned and live a full lifespan,” the ancient text tells the couple to have rice prepared with sesame and eat it with ghee. It claims that they will be able to produce such a daughter.
Context
Amid formulas for sons, this passage explicitly expresses a wish for a learned daughter.
Explanation
Pandita ordinarily means learned; this base sentence does not restrict her learning to household work. The food rite is not treated as a medical means of determining intelligence or sex at birth.
Passage 46.18
English meaning
For one who wishes, “May my son be born learned, renowned, able to enter assemblies, and a speaker whose words people wish to hear; may he recite all the Vedas and live a full lifespan,” the ancient text tells the couple to have rice cooked with meat and eat it with ghee. It claims that they will be able to produce such a son. The meat is specified as that of a young bull or a mature bull.
Context
The last food formula adds public eloquence and competence in assemblies to learning.
Explanation
Mamsaudana and the bovine terms are not replaced by fruit or plant foods. They refer to animal flesh in this ancient ritual. The asserted connection between diet and a child’s qualities is historical, not advice for imitation or medical guidance.
English meaning
Then, very early in the morning, after preparing ghee according to the pot-cooked offering rite, he offers portions of the cooked food: “Svaha to Agni; svaha to Anumati; svaha to the god Savitr whose bringing-forth is true.” Having offered, he takes out and eats the remainder; after eating, he gives it to the other partner, his wife. He washes both hands, fills a water vessel and sprinkles her three times with its water: “Vishvavasu, rise from here; seek another young woman. Join the wife with her husband.”
Context
After the food-and-desire formulas comes the morning pot-offering and the rite leading to the couple’s union.
Explanation
Anumati is a divine name here, not a substitute for the modern requirement of consent. Vishvavasu’s departure and the couple’s joining belong to an ancient marriage-ritual setting.
English meaning
Then he approaches her and says: “I am ama; you are sa. You are sa; I am ama. I am saman; you are rik. I am heaven; you are earth. Come, let us engage together; let us place seed together, for a male child, a son, and prosperity.”
Context
The union formula presents man and woman as pairs of sounds, Vedic forms and cosmic regions.
Explanation
The sounds sa and ama evoke saman when joined, so they are retained. The desire for a son and prosperity belongs to the ancient household purpose, not an editorial claim that sons are superior to daughters.
English meaning
The ancient text next describes parting her thighs with the words, “Heaven and earth, open apart.” After inserting the penis and joining mouth to mouth, he strokes her three times in the downward direction, saying: “May Vishnu prepare the womb; may Tvashtar shape the forms; may Prajapati pour in; may Dhatr place a pregnancy in you. Sinivali, place a pregnancy; Prithushtuka, place a pregnancy. May the two divine Ashvins, wearing lotus garlands, establish a pregnancy in you.”
Context
The heaven-earth pairing is applied to bodily union, followed by appeals to several deities for conception.
Explanation
Vishnu, Tvashtar, Prajapati, Dhatr, Sinivali, Prithushtuka and the Ashvins retain their separate roles. This historical conception formula neither removes the need for consent nor guarantees pregnancy.
Passage 46.22
English meaning
“There are the two golden fire-sticks with which the Ashvins are to churn. We call forth that pregnancy for you, for birth in the tenth month. As earth carries fire within, as heaven is pregnant with what belongs to Indra, and as wind is the embryo of the directions, so, named woman, I place a pregnancy in you.”
Context
The conception formula continues through fire-stick churning and three images of cosmic pregnancy.
Explanation
Earth/fire, heaven/what belongs to Indra, and directions/wind are the three comparisons. The tenth month belongs to ancient reckoning of gestation, not present-day obstetric advice.
English meaning
As birth approaches, the text describes sprinkling the woman with water and saying: “As wind stirs a lotus pool on every side, so may your fetus move and descend together with the afterbirth. This enclosure of Indra has been made with its bar and surrounding fence. Indra, break it open and bring forth the fetus together with its coverings [the final construction is difficult].”
Context
The focus shifts from conception to childbirth, using images of water, wind and an enclosure.
Explanation
Jarayu denotes fetal covering or afterbirth. This is a description of an ancient childbirth formula, not a method of delivering a baby or medical advice; the difficult final sentence is not recast as confident clinical language.
English meaning
When the child is born, he establishes a fire, places the infant on his lap, mixes curd and ghee in a bronze vessel and offers portions of it: “Growing in my own home, may I nourish a thousand in this child. May this child’s continuity through offspring and livestock not be cut off, svaha. With my mind I offer the vital powers within me into you, svaha. Whatever I have done in excess in this rite, or whatever I have done too little, may the knowing Agni Svishtakrit make it well sacrificed and well offered for us, svaha.”
Context
The birth rite begins with fire and holding the infant. Three svaha formulas concern increase, vital powers and completion of the rite.
Explanation
The thousand, continuity of descendants and livestock evoke ancient household prosperity. The last formula asks that excess or deficiency in the rite be made good. This is a birth-ceremony account, not infant-care advice.
English meaning
He then brings his mouth to the infant’s right ear and says “Speech, speech” three times. The historical rite next describes mixing curd, honey and ghee and feeding it to the infant by means of gold without an intervening covering, saying: “I place bhuh in you; I place bhuvah in you; I place svah in you; I place bhuh, bhuvah, svah, the whole, in you.” This describes an ancient ceremony, not advice about feeding a newborn.
Context
The symbolic placing of speech in the ear is followed by placing the three world-utterances in the infant.
Explanation
The right ear, doubled “speech,” three repetitions, three food substances and final combined utterance are distinct details. The translation preserves them without turning the ancient feeding practice into modern infant-care instructions.
Passage 46.26
English meaning
Then the infant is handed to the mother and the breast is offered, with the words: “Sarasvati, make available here for suckling that breast of yours which is unfailing, brings delight, bears treasures, finds wealth and gives generously, through which you nourish all desirable things.”
Context
After naming, maternal nursing is associated with Sarasvati’s nourishing image.
Explanation
Handing the infant to the mother and offering the breast are two actions in the source. Five epithets praise nourishment; wealth and treasures are hymnic language, not a modern nutritional analysis of milk.
English meaning
He then addresses the child’s mother: “You are Ila, daughter of Mitra and Varuna. Heroic mother, you have borne a hero. Be the mother of heroes, you who have made us possessors of heroes.” Of such a son people say, “Indeed you have surpassed your father; indeed you have surpassed your grandfather. He has reached the highest point in prosperity, renown and sacred learning’s radiance,” when a son is born to a brahmana who knows this.
Context
The offspring-rite brahmana closes by praising the mother and proclaiming the son’s future distinction.
Explanation
The Ila comparison connects the mother with divine narrative; surpassing father and grandfather expresses hoped-for lineage achievement. The special benefit claimed for a brahmana’s son is historical, not endorsement of superiority by birth.
Context
The brahmana concerning offspring opens with a seven-link chain of essence from the world’s beings to semen.
