English meaning
In the beginning there was nothing here. All this was covered by death, that is, hunger, for hunger is death. It brought forth mind, thinking, “May I possess a self.” It moved about in worship. As it worshipped, water arose. “While I worshipped, kam, happiness or water, came to me,” it thought. This is the explanation of arka through arkya. Happiness indeed comes to the person who knows this explanation of arka in that way.
Context
The second brahmana offers a creation account behind the cosmic horse. It begins with death and hunger, rather than a biological account of development.
Explanation
Death appears here not merely as the end of life but as hunger that demands food. The emergence of mind, worship and water belongs to that narrative. The connections among arch, arka and kam are Vedic interpretive wordplay, not a claim of modern historical etymology. The rendering keeps the explanatory association of kam with both happiness and water visible.
English meaning
The waters are arka. The film upon the waters gathered into a solid mass and became earth. It exerted itself upon that earth. From its exhaustion and heat emerged its radiant essence, fire.
Context
After the emergence of water, the narrative describes earth and fire. The creator figured as death remains the implied subject of the action.
Explanation
Sharah denotes a surface film or layer. Its gathering into earth, followed by fire emerging from heated exertion, is a ritual image of the world’s formation. Tejas and rasa describe the luminous essence that becomes fire. This account is not presented as a prediction of modern physics or geology.
Passage 2.3
English meaning
It divided itself into three: the sun as one third and wind as one third. This vital power is thus arranged in three forms. East is its head, and the two directions on either side its two arms. West is its tail, and the two directions on either side its thighs. South and north are its flanks. Heaven is its back, the intermediate region its belly, and this earth its chest. It is established in the waters. Whoever knows it in this way finds a footing wherever they go.
Context
After fire emerges, the text relates it to sun and wind. Its directional body continues the mode of correspondence established in the first brahmana.
Explanation
The remaining third is the fire already introduced; sun and wind are explicitly named here. “That direction and that direction” points to the adjoining directions on either side. The concluding promise of a footing praises this ritual knowledge; it is not practical assurance of safe travel or worldly success.
Passage 2.4
English meaning
It desired, “May a second self of mine be born.” Death, as hunger, joined with speech as a pair through mind. The seed that resulted became the year; before this there had been no year. It carried that offspring for the length of a year, then brought it forth at the end of that time. It opened its mouth toward the newborn to swallow it. The newborn made the sound “bhan”; that became speech.
Context
After the three cosmic forms, the story returns to the creator’s desire. The pairing of mind and speech is connected with the year and the voice of a newborn.
Explanation
Desire, carrying seed and giving birth are the narrative language of creation here. Speech appears first as a partner and then as a newborn sound, expressing related ideas through different images. This is not medical information about human gestation or childbirth. The final “it” is understood as the newborn, completing the exchange between threatened swallowing and a answering cry.
Passage 2.5
English meaning
It considered, “If I eat this, I shall make my food less.” With that speech and that self it created everything here: the Rig verses, Yajus formulas, Saman chants, metres, sacrifices, offspring and animals. Whatever it created, it resolved to eat. Because it eats everything, the text explains it as Aditi. Whoever knows Aditi’s character in this way becomes an eater of everything, and everything becomes that person’s food.
Context
The wish to swallow the newborn is deferred. Instead of immediate consumption, the creator produces the multiplicity of a world that can serve as food.
Explanation
Creation and consumption are two sides of the same process. Metres and sacrifices appear alongside Rig, Yajus and Saman, so the account also explains the emergence of Vedic ritual. The association of atti, “eats,” with Aditi is the text’s interpretive wordplay. The promise that everything becomes food is a ritual statement about knowledge, not permission to eat anything or dominate others.
Passage 2.6
English meaning
It desired, “May I sacrifice further with a greater sacrifice.” It exerted itself and practised austerity. As it grew exhausted and heated, its glory and vigour departed. The vital powers are its glory and vigour. When those powers had gone out, the body began to swell. Its mind remained within the body.
Context
The account turns from creation as food back to sacrifice. The swelling body prepares the Vedic explanation of the word ashva in the next passage.
Explanation
Heat, exertion and ritual effort are linked in tapas here. The departure of the vital powers while mind remains in the body belongs to this particular creation account; it is not a modern medical criterion of death. Virya is rendered as vigour because the passage itself identifies it with the vital powers.
English meaning
It desired, “May this body of mine be fit for sacrifice, and may I possess a self through it.” Then the horse came into being. What had swollen became fit for sacrifice; through this the text explains ashvamedha. One who knows the horse in this way knows the ashvamedha. It considered that horse for the sacrifice without restraining it. At the end of a year it sacrificed the horse to itself, assigning the other animals to the gods. Accordingly, a consecrated animal dedicated to Prajapati and belonging to all the gods is sacrificed. The sun that gives heat is this ashvamedha, and the year is its self. This fire is arka, and these worlds are its selves. These two are arka and ashvamedha. It then becomes a single deity again, death itself. The knower overcomes repeated death: death does not seize that person but becomes their own self. That person attains a full lifespan and becomes one of these deities.
Context
The second brahmana closes by bringing together the horse’s origin, the ashvamedha ritual, and identifications with sun and fire. It completes the narrative background of the cosmic horse at the opening.
Explanation
The connection between ashvat, “swelled,” and ashva belongs to the text’s Vedic word explanation. Alabhata is translated as sacrificing rather than euphemized, so that the historical animal sacrifice remains clear. The final sentences state the fruits of ritual knowledge linking creator, sun, fire and death. They are not present-day advice to perform animal sacrifice, guarantees of bodily immortality, or medical means of extending life.
