English meaning
Yajnavalkya had two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Maitreyi took part in inquiry into brahman; Katyayani at that time had the kind of domestic understanding the text characterizes as a woman’s. Yajnavalkya was about to undertake a different way of life.
Explanation
Maitreyi’s philosophical participation is explicit. Striprajna is the source’s historical gendered category, not a judgment about women’s intelligence or either wife’s worth today. “Domestic understanding” is an interpretive gloss; the literal phrase is “a woman’s understanding.”
Context
The Maitreyi dialogue returns with a new narrative introduction.
