English meaning
In the beginning all this was water. Those waters produced truth; truth produced Brahman, Brahman produced Prajapati, and Prajapati produced the gods. Those gods contemplate truth itself. The name satiyam is treated as three syllables: sa is one, ti is one, and yam is one. The first and last syllables are truth; untruth lies in the middle. Thus untruth is enclosed by truth on both sides, and truth predominates. Untruth does not injure one who knows in this way.
संदर्भ
सत्य-ब्रह्म की घोषणा अब एक सृष्टि-क्रम और शब्द-चिन्तन से जुड़ती है। पानी, सत्य, ब्रह्म, प्रजापति और देवता क्रम से आते हैं।
Context
The declaration concerning truth and Brahman is now developed through a sequence of origins and a contemplation of a word. Water, truth, Brahman, Prajapati and the gods appear in order.
व्याख्या
सत्यम् को यहाँ जानबूझकर सतियम् के तीन अक्षरों में पढ़ा गया है। दो बाहरी अक्षरों का सत्य और बीच का अनृत होना एक उपासनात्मक व्यवस्था है। यह झूठ बोलने की छूट या उससे होने वाली वास्तविक हानि के नकार का कथन नहीं माना गया है।
Explanation
Satyam is deliberately presented here as the three-syllable satiyam. Assigning truth to the outer syllables and untruth to the middle is a contemplative arrangement. It should not be turned into permission to lie or a denial of the actual harm falsehood can cause.
Passage 32.2
English meaning
That truth is this sun. The person in the solar disc and the person here in the right eye are established in one another. The solar person is established in this one through rays, and this person in the eye is established in the solar person through the vital powers. When a person is about to depart from the body, the disc is seen as bare and clear; these rays no longer come back toward that person.
संदर्भ
सत्य की उपासना अब सूर्य और दाहिनी आँख के बीच सम्बन्ध बनाती है। इसके बाद दोनों पुरुषों के समान रूप और अलग गुप्त नाम बताए जाएँगे।
Context
The contemplation of truth now links the sun with the right eye. The following two passages give the two persons matching forms but different secret names.
व्याख्या
सूर्य की किरणें और प्राण देखने वाले तथा दृश्य प्रकाश के परस्पर आश्रय का चित्र बनाते हैं। अन्त की मृत्यु-सम्बन्धी बात पाठ का प्राचीन संकेत-वर्णन है, आधुनिक रोग-पहचान या मृत्यु का विश्वसनीय परीक्षण नहीं। सूर्य को सीधे देखने की सलाह भी इससे नहीं निकलती।
Explanation
The rays and vital powers express the mutual dependence of the perceiver and visible light. The closing account of departure is an ancient sign of dying within the text, not a modern diagnostic test or reliable prediction of death. It is not advice to look directly at the sun.
English meaning
For the person in this solar disc, bhuh is the head: the head is one and this syllable is one. Bhuvah is the arms: the arms are two and these syllables are two. Svah is the standing support: the supports are two and these syllables are two. The secret name of that person is ahar. One who knows in this way strikes down and leaves behind evil or affliction.
संदर्भ
यह सूर्यस्थ पुरुष का अक्षरात्मक शरीर-विन्यास है। अगले अनुच्छेद में आँख के पुरुष के लिए वही विन्यास फिर आएगा।
Context
This passage constructs the solar person’s body from sacred utterances. The same arrangement is repeated for the person in the eye in the next passage.
व्याख्या
भूः, भुवः और स्वः को सिर, दो भुजाओं और दो पैरों के आधार से मिलाया गया है। स्वः के दो अक्षर होने का कथन वैदिक उच्चारण-विधि से सम्बन्धित कठिन बिन्दु है; सामान्य आधुनिक वर्तनी देखकर इसे एक अक्षर में नहीं बदला गया। उपनिषद् यहाँ गुप्त नाम या रहस्य है, पुस्तक का शीर्षक नहीं।
Explanation
Bhuh, bhuvah and svah correspond to the head, two arms and the two supports of standing. Counting svah as two syllables is a difficult point involving Vedic pronunciation; it has not been reduced to one on the basis of modern spelling. Upanisad here means a secret name or teaching, not the title of a book.
English meaning
For the person in the right eye, bhuh is the head: the head is one and this syllable is one. Bhuvah is the arms: the arms are two and these syllables are two. Svah is the standing support: the supports are two and these syllables are two. The secret name of that person is aham, “I.” One who knows in this way strikes down and leaves behind evil or affliction.
संदर्भ
सूर्यस्थ पुरुष के बाद दाहिनी आँख का पुरुष उसी त्रिस्तरीय शरीर-विन्यास में रखा जाता है। यहाँ गुप्त नाम बदलकर अहम् हो जाता है।
Context
After the solar person, the person in the right eye receives the same three-part bodily arrangement. Here the secret name changes to aham.
व्याख्या
बाहर के प्रकाश और भीतर के “मैं” को समान विन्यास में रखकर पाठ उनका सम्बन्ध गहरा करता है। एक जैसी पंक्तियाँ इस समानता का हिस्सा हैं, अतिरिक्त सामग्री नहीं। पाप्मा का विनाश उपासना का बताया गया धार्मिक फल है।
Explanation
Giving outer light and the inward “I” matching forms deepens their connection. The repeated lines are part of that correspondence, not redundant material to omit. The defeat of evil is the religious benefit attributed to the contemplation.
