English meaning
Dripta Balaki of the Gargya lineage was a learned reciter of the Veda. He said to Ajatashatru of Kashi, “Let me tell you about Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “For this very offer we give a thousand; people do keep running to Janaka, calling ‘Janaka, Janaka!’”
Context
The second adhyaya opens with Balaki approaching Ajatashatru, king of Kashi. Balaki initially presents himself as the teacher.
Explanation
Anuchana indicates mastery of Vedic study and recitation, not automatically complete knowledge of Brahman. The reference to Janaka evokes a royal reputation for patronizing learning. Since the object of “a thousand” is unstated here, the rendering does not silently specify cows.
Passage 7.2
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on that person in the sun as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the one who stands above all, the head and king of all beings.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person stands above all, becoming the head and king of all beings.
Context
The person in the sun is the first proposed object of meditation.
Explanation
The king does not simply reject this meditation; he already knows it and its particular result. The sun’s elevation and prominence are associated with leadership.
Passage 7.3
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on that person in the moon as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the great, white-robed King Soma.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: Soma is pressed for that person day after day, pressed abundantly; that person’s food does not run out.
Context
After the sun, Balaki proposes the person in the moon as Brahman.
Explanation
Calling the moon Soma connects the lunar deity with the Soma rite. The result belongs to an ancient account of sacrifice and abundance, not a present-day guarantee.
Passage 7.4
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on that person in lightning as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as radiant.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person becomes radiant, and that person’s offspring becomes radiant.
Context
The third proposal concerns the light of lightning.
Explanation
Lightning’s brilliance is linked with the brilliance of the meditator and offspring. The fruit resembles the object contemplated; the dialogue has not yet reached the basis of all forms.
Passage 7.5
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in space as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as full and unmoving.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person is filled with offspring and livestock; that person’s line is not uprooted from this world.
Context
The discussion moves beyond visible lights to the person in space.
Explanation
The fullness and stability of space are related to continuity of descendants and abundance of livestock. Apravarti is understood here as unmoving, not as a final definition of Brahman.
Passage 7.6
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in the wind as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as Indra Vaikuntha, the unconquered army.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person becomes victorious and undefeated, a conqueror of opposing sides.
Context
The next exchange concerns the person in wind.
Explanation
Wind’s power is expressed in the language of victory and an unconquered army. Vaikuntha is here an epithet or designation of Indra; it is not silently turned into a reference to Vishnu’s heavenly abode.
Passage 7.7
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in fire as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the one who prevails mightily.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person becomes one who prevails mightily, and that person’s offspring likewise prevails.
Context
Fire follows wind as the object of contemplation.
Explanation
Vishasahi conveys forceful endurance or prevailing over opposition. Rendering it merely as patience would lose the vigorous image associated with fire.
Passage 7.8
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in the waters as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the fitting or corresponding one.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: What is fitting comes to that person, not what is unfitting; an offspring corresponding to that person is also born.
Context
The person in water is contemplated under the name of correspondence.
Explanation
Pratirupa suggests both correspondence in form and suitability. Reflection in water may illuminate the association, but the passage itself does not use the word reflection. Both results are retained: fitting things arrive, and corresponding offspring is born.
Passage 7.9
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in a mirror as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the shining one.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person becomes shining, that person’s offspring becomes shining, and that person outshines everyone encountered.
Context
This time the proposed object is the person appearing in a mirror.
Explanation
The luminous appearance in the mirror is connected with brilliance and distinction among others. The exchange also exposes the limit of treating the sun, lightning and a reflected image as interchangeable final knowledge.
Passage 7.10
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this sound that follows behind a person walking as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as vital life.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person lives out a full lifespan in this world; the breath of life does not leave before the appointed time.
Context
Balaki now calls the sound following a walking person Brahman.
Explanation
The king knows this sound as asu, vital life. The promised lifespan is part of the ancient meditation teaching, not medical advice for preventing illness, ensuring safety or postponing death.
Passage 7.11
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in the directions as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the companion who never departs.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person has a companion, and the group around that person does not fall away.
Context
The person in the directions is associated with enduring companionship.
Explanation
Dvitiya literally means a second; with anapaga it becomes a companion who does not go away. Gana can mean a group of relatives, followers or associates, and is not restricted here to a modern organization.
Passage 7.12
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person made of shadow as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as death.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person lives out a full lifespan in this world; death does not come before the appointed time.
Context
After the sound associated with life, the shadow-person is contemplated as death.
Explanation
Meditating on death is here assigned the fruit of a full lifespan. This is Vedic reflection on the boundary between life and death, not permission to disregard actual health risks.
Passage 7.13
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person within oneself as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as one possessed of a self.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: That person becomes possessed of a self, and that person’s offspring likewise possesses a self. Gargya then fell silent.
Context
Balaki’s final proposal is the person within oneself; after this his answers run out.
Explanation
Atmani here locates the person within the individual or embodied self; atmanvin suggests possession of selfhood or self-possession. The next passage distinguishes this particular contemplation from full knowledge of the Self.
Passage 7.14
English meaning
Ajatashatru asked, “Is that all?” Gargya answered, “That is all.” The king said, “It is not known through this much.” Gargya replied, “Let me approach you as a pupil.”
Context
After Balaki’s twelve contemplations, the roles of teacher and pupil are reversed.
Explanation
The king refuses to equate a collection of particular meditations with complete knowledge. Gargya’s request to approach is a request for instruction, not merely to stand nearby.
Passage 7.15
English meaning
Ajatashatru said, “It reverses the customary order for a Brahmin to approach a Kshatriya thinking, ‘He will teach me Brahman.’ Nevertheless, I shall make it clear to you.” Taking Gargya by the hand, he stood up. They came to a sleeping man. The king addressed him with these names: “Great one, white-robed one, Soma, king!” He did not rise. The king woke him by pressing or shaking him with his hand, and then he got up.
Context
The king now moves from verbal propositions to a demonstration involving a sleeping person.
Explanation
The names used in the lunar meditation are deliberately repeated, but they do not wake the sleeper. The remark about Brahmin and Kshatriya reflects a historical social expectation, not a present rule governing education or equality. Apesham indicates physical pressing or shaking.
Passage 7.16
English meaning
Ajatashatru asked, “When this person constituted by awareness was asleep like this, where was he then, and from where has he now returned?” Gargya did not know.
Context
With the sleeper now awake, the king asks about the location or basis of awareness between sleeping and waking.
Explanation
Vijnanamaya describes the person in relation to the capacity for knowing. The question is not where the body remained in the room, but what became of the experiencer who ceased to know external objects.
English meaning
Ajatashatru said, “When this person constituted by awareness was asleep in that way, he had gathered the knowing capacities of these vital faculties by means of awareness and was resting in the space within the heart. When he takes these faculties into himself, the person is said to sleep. Then the breath is gathered in; speech is gathered in; sight is gathered in; hearing is gathered in; and mind is gathered in.”
Context
The king answers by describing sleep as a gathering-in of the activities of the faculties.
Explanation
Pranas in the plural includes the vital and sensory faculties, while the singular prana later in the list denotes breath or the principal vital function. The heart-space belongs to this ancient account of awareness, not to a modern anatomical map of sleep.
Passage 7.18
English meaning
When he moves about in dream, those are his own worlds. There he becomes, as it were, a great king, or a great Brahmin, or passes through high and low conditions. As a great king might take the people of his realm with him and move through his own domain as he wishes, so this person takes the vital faculties and moves as he wishes within his own body.
Context
The account moves from sleep in general to the inward experiences of dreaming.
Explanation
The repeated “as it were” marks kingship and Brahmin status as dream experiences, not actual changes of social position. A king moving in his own realm illustrates the experiencer’s relation to the faculties in a dream world.
Passage 7.19
English meaning
When he is deeply asleep, when he is aware of nothing at all, there are seventy-two thousand channels called Hita extending from the heart toward the puritat. Withdrawing through them, he rests in the puritat. As a child, a great king or a great Brahmin might sleep after reaching an utmost degree of happiness, so he sleeps then.
Context
After dreams comes deep sleep, in which no particular object is known.
Explanation
Puritat is commonly understood as a covering or region around the heart; no exact modern anatomical identification is asserted. The seventy-two thousand channels belong to the text’s ancient model of the body, not a clinical fact or a prescription. The three examples illustrate untroubled repose.
English meaning
As a spider comes forth along its thread, and as tiny sparks fly out from a fire, so all vital faculties, all worlds, all gods and all beings issue from this Self. Its hidden designation is “the truth of truth.” The vital faculties are truth, and this is their truth.
Context
The first brahmana concludes by moving from sleep to the Self as the source of life and the worlds.
Explanation
The spider and sparks illustrate emergence together with dependence on a source. The vital faculties are not dismissed as false; the Self is called the foundation of their truth. Upanishad here means a hidden identification, not the title of a book.
Context
The second adhyaya opens with Balaki approaching Ajatashatru, king of Kashi. Balaki initially presents himself as the teacher.
