English meaning
Yajnavalkya said, “Let us hear whatever someone has told you.” Janaka replied, “Jitvan Shailini told me that speech is brahman.” “Shailini spoke as one well taught by mother, father and teacher would speak. What could be accomplished without speaking? But did he explain its abode and foundation?” “He did not.” “Then, Your Majesty, that teaching has only one foot.” “Please tell us.” “Speech is its abode and space its foundation. Contemplate it as understanding.” “What is that understanding, Yajnavalkya?” “Speech itself, Your Majesty. Through speech a relative is recognized. The Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvangiras, history, ancient lore, disciplines of knowledge, Upanishads, verses, aphorisms, supplementary explanations, explanations, sacrifice, oblation, giving food, giving drink, this world, the other world and all beings are known through speech. Speech is the highest brahman, Your Majesty. Speech does not forsake one who knows and contemplates it in this way; all beings approach that person, who becomes a deity and joins the gods.” Janaka said, “I give a thousand cows with a bull as large as an elephant.” Yajnavalkya replied, “My father held that one should not take a gift without completing the instruction.”
