English meaning
Vidagdha Shakalya then asked, “Yajnavalkya, how many gods are there?” He answered with the invocation to the All-gods: “Three and three hundred, and three and three thousand.” Shakalya said, “Yes, but how many precisely?” “Thirty-three.” “Yes, but how many?” “Six.” “Yes, but how many?” “Three.” “Yes, but how many?” “Two.” “Yes, but how many?” “One and a half.” “Yes, but how many?” “One.” “Yes. Then which are those three and three hundred, and three and three thousand?”
Context
Shakalya’s dialogue progressively reduces the number of gods.
Explanation
A nivid is an invocation. The changing numbers express levels of correlation, not rival censuses. The initial numerical groups total 3,306; this passage does not state a number in the millions.
Passage 21.2
English meaning
Yajnavalkya said, “Those are their manifestations of greatness; the gods are thirty-three.” “Which thirty-three?” “Eight Vasus, eleven Rudras and twelve Adityas make thirty-one; with Indra and Prajapati they are thirty-three.”
Context
The large invocatory group is related to thirty-three principal forms.
Explanation
Mahiman points to expanded manifestations. The Vasus and others will be explained through nature, bodily powers and time, rather than solely through personal names.
Passage 21.3
English meaning
“Which are the Vasus?” “Fire, earth, wind, intermediate space, sun, heaven, moon and stars. These are the Vasus, because all this wealth or existent world is lodged in them; hence they are called Vasus.”
Context
The eight Vasus are identified within the natural world.
Explanation
The explanation connects the Vasus with what is lodged or dwells in them. This is a Vedic interpretive etymology, not a claim of modern historical linguistics.
Passage 21.4
English meaning
“Which are the Rudras?” “The ten vital powers in a person, with the self or mind as the eleventh. When they depart from this mortal body, they make people weep. Because they cause weeping, they are called Rudras.”
Context
The Rudras are correlated with the person’s living powers.
Explanation
The verbal link between causing tears and Rudra connects the name with grief at death. The ten powers are not enumerated here and should not be silently replaced by a modern anatomical list.
English meaning
“Which are the Adityas?” “The twelve months of the year. They go on taking all this away. Because they proceed taking everything, they are called Adityas.”
Context
The Adityas are explained as the twelve months.
Explanation
Their “taking” evokes the passage of time. The twelvefold solar cycle is connected with life’s finite duration.
English meaning
“Which is Indra, and which is Prajapati?” “The thunderer is Indra; sacrifice is Prajapati.” “What is the thunderer?” “The thunderbolt.” “What is sacrifice?” “The sacrificial animals.”
Context
The final two gods are identified with thunder and sacrifice.
Explanation
Pashavah preserves the role of animals in historical sacrifice; it should not be erased by making the whole line merely metaphorical. This is a historical ritual identification, not advice to harm animals.
Passage 21.7
English meaning
“Which are the three gods?” “These three worlds, for all the gods are in them.” “Which are the two?” “Food and breath.” “Which is one and a half?” “This wind that blows.”
Context
The count moves from three worlds to food and breath, then to wind.
Explanation
Food and breath represent interdependent conditions of life. The unusual answer “one and a half” is explained through a wordplay in the next unit.
Passage 21.9
English meaning
People ask, “This wind seems to blow as just one; how is it one and a half?” “Because all this grows and prospers in it, it is called adhyardha.” “Which is the one god?” “Breath. It is brahman, referred to as tyat, ‘that.’”
Context
The numerical sequence ends with breath and brahman.
Explanation
The connection of adhyardha with growing or prospering is interpretive wordplay. Tyat is a Vedic demonstrative, “that,” not an additional deity’s personal name.
Passage 21.10
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is earth, whose world is fire and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the embodied person. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “The deathless or nectar.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the embodied person.
Explanation
The embodied person is correlated with earth and fire. Amrita is retained without silently adding an identification not stated in the sentence.
Passage 21.11
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is desire, whose world is the heart and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person formed of desire. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Women.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person formed of desire.
Explanation
Identifying women as the deity of a desire-formed male person reflects the passage’s historical male-centred perspective, not a universal account of women or of everyone’s desires.
Passage 21.12
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is visible forms, whose world is the eye and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person in the sun. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Truth.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person in the sun.
Explanation
Visible form, eye and sun are correlated. Mind is called light because it is through mental awareness that the visible is apprehended.
Passage 21.13
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is space, whose world is hearing and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person encountered in hearing as an echo. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “The directions.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person encountered in hearing as an echo.
Explanation
Echo is sound returning to the hearer. Space and directions describe the spread and orientation of the audible field.
Passage 21.14
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is darkness, whose world is the heart and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the shadow-formed person. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Death.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the shadow-formed person.
Explanation
The link of shadow and darkness with death is a religious correlation, not a prediction that seeing a shadow causes death.
Passage 21.15
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is visible forms, whose world is the heart and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person in the mirror. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Truth.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person in the mirror.
Explanation
The mirror-person is a reflected appearance. Unlike the solar form earlier, this formulation connects the apprehension of form with the heart.
Passage 21.16
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is the waters, whose world is the heart and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person in the waters. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Varuna.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person in the waters.
Explanation
Varuna is the Vedic divine correlate of the person in water. Heart and mind retain the inner aspect of apprehending that form.
Passage 21.17
English meaning
Shakalya said, “One who knows the person whose abode is semen, whose world is the heart and whose light is mind, the final resort of the whole self, would indeed be a knower, Yajnavalkya.” Yajnavalkya replied, “I know that person, the final resort of the whole self, whom you describe: it is the person embodied in the son. Tell me, Shakalya, what is its deity?” He answered, “Prajapati.”
Context
The eight-person examination now concerns the person embodied in the son.
Explanation
Continuity through a son belongs to the passage’s historical patrilineal thought. It is neither modern reproductive science nor advice to prefer sons to daughters.
English meaning
Shakalya said, “Yajnavalkya, on the strength of what knowledge of brahman have you outargued these Brahmins of Kuru and Panchala?” “I know the directions together with their deities and foundations.” “If you know the directions with their deities and foundations, then tell us.”
Context
Shakalya now begins an examination of the directions.
Explanation
Knowing a direction involves its deity and foundation, not merely its name. The following sequence will lead each direction back to the heart.
English meaning
Shakalya asked, “What deity have you in the eastern direction?” “The sun.” “In what is the sun established?” “In the eye.” “And the eye?” “In visible forms, for one sees forms through the eye.” “And the forms?” “In the heart, for one knows forms through the heart. Forms are established in the heart.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
The eastern sequence leads from sun to visual experience and heart.
Explanation
The heart is also a centre of cognition in the ancient account. This does not make the anatomical heart a replacement for the brain in modern neuroscience.
English meaning
“What deity have you in the southern direction?” “Yama.” “In what is Yama established?” “In sacrifice.” “And sacrifice?” “In the ritual gift.” “And the gift?” “In trust, for one gives the gift when one has trust; the gift is established in trust.” “And trust?” “In the heart: trust is known through the heart and is established there.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
The southern direction reaches the heart through sacrifice, gift and trust.
Explanation
Dakshina is the ritual gift to an officiant. Shraddha is the committed trust behind it; this is not a present-day demand for payment.
English meaning
“What deity have you in the western direction?” “Varuna.” “In what is Varuna established?” “In the waters.” “And the waters?” “In semen.” “And semen?” “In the heart. Hence, when a resembling child is born, people say, ‘As though it issued from the heart, as though it were made from the heart.’ For semen is established in the heart.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
The western correlation reaches the heart through water and generation.
Explanation
The heart-born-child image explains resemblance and continuity within ancient thought. The location assigned to semen is not a modern physiological or genetic account.
English meaning
“What deity have you in the northern direction?” “Soma.” “In what is Soma established?” “In consecration.” “And consecration?” “In truth. Therefore they tell the consecrated person, ‘Speak truth,’ for consecration is established in truth.” “And truth?” “In the heart, for one knows truth through the heart; truth is established in the heart.” “That is so, Yajnavalkya.”
Context
The northern sequence moves from ritual consecration to truth.
Explanation
Soma and consecration belong to the sacrificial setting. The insistence on truth links the outward rite to inward integrity.
English meaning
“What deity have you in this fixed, upward direction?” “Fire.” “In what is fire established?” “In speech.” “And speech?” “In the heart.” “In what, then, is the heart established?”
Context
The fifth direction opens the question of the heart’s own support.
Explanation
Dhruva means fixed; the ancient commentary reads it as the upward direction. Having gathered the directions into the heart, the discussion returns to the person’s own foundation.
English meaning
Yajnavalkya said, “Ahallika, to think that this heart could be somewhere apart from us! If it were apart from us, dogs would eat this body or birds would tear it apart.”
Context
The reply rejects locating the heart apart from the living person.
Explanation
Ahallika is a sharp form of address; no unverified modern insult is imposed on it. The image of a lifeless body illustrates the interdependence of heart and body.
Passage 21.26
English meaning
Shakalya asked, “In what, then, are you and your inner self, the heart, established?” “In prana.” “And prana?” “In apana.” “And apana?” “In vyana.” “And vyana?” “In udana.” “And udana?” “In samana.” This is the Self indicated as “not this, not this”: ungraspable, for it is not grasped; undecaying, for it does not decay; unattached, for it does not cling; unbound, untroubled and unharmed. Yajnavalkya said, “These are eight abodes, eight worlds, eight deities and eight persons. I ask you about the person taught in the Upanishad who, having discerned those persons and gathered them back together, has passed beyond them. If you cannot tell me, your head will fall off.” Shakalya did not know that person. His head fell off. Thieves even carried away his bones, mistaking them for something else.
Context
The sequence of directions and vital powers ends with a decisive counter-question and Shakalya’s fate.
Explanation
The Upanishadic person is the Self beyond the eight conditioned forms. “Not this, not this” prevents taking any such form as final. The falling head and stolen bones are features of the religious narrative, not approval of violence against a debate opponent. The source’s add-like intrusion is now excluded from both displayed Sanskrit and analyzed words.
Passage 21.27
English meaning
Yajnavalkya then said, “Revered Brahmins, whichever of you wishes may question me, or all of you may do so. I may question whichever of you wishes, or I may question you all.” The Brahmins did not dare.
Context
An open challenge is now addressed to the whole assembly.
Explanation
Both individual and collective questioning are offered, with the roles reversible. After their silence, Yajnavalkya will pose the concluding verse-question.
English meaning
He questioned them with these verses: As a tree, a forest-growth, so indeed is a person; this is no false comparison. The person’s hairs correspond to leaves, and the outer skin to the tree’s peeling bark. Blood flows from the person’s skin as sap bursts through bark. Thus blood comes from a wounded person as sap from a tree that has been struck. The person’s flesh corresponds to the tree’s bark-layers; the firm sinews to its fibrous inner bark. The inner bones correspond to wood, and marrow is compared with the tree’s pith. A felled tree grows again, renewed, from its root. From what root does a mortal, cut down by death, grow again? Do not say “from semen,” for that arises from a living person. A tree also grows from seed: its coming forth again after death is directly possible. If a tree is uprooted with its root, it does not come forth again. From what root does a mortal, cut down by death, grow again? Being already born does not by itself bring another birth: who could bring him forth again? Brahman, awareness and bliss, is the final resort of the giver of gifts, and of the one who stands firmly in it and knows it.
Context
The chapter’s final question uses the person-tree analogy to ask about the root of birth and death.
Explanation
The bodily parallels prepare a question rather than establish a complete botanical-anatomical equivalence. Naming seed or semen produced by the living does not settle the root of renewed existence after death. The final statement gives a positive indication of brahman as awareness and bliss. The selected witness repeats the last couplet; a documented transcription repair reads it once. Both original copies remain in the raw evidence. The syntax of ratir datuh and jata eva na jayate remains interpretively difficult.
Context
Shakalya’s dialogue progressively reduces the number of gods.
