English meaning
In the beginning this was the self alone, in a human-like form. Looking around, it saw nothing other than itself. It first declared, “I am.” Thus “I” became its name. Even now, when addressed, a person first says “It is I,” and then gives whatever other name they have. Because it burned all evils before all this, it was called purusha. The text says that one who knows this burns the rival who seeks to precede them.
Context
The fourth brahmana begins a new account of creation with the self in a person-like form.
Explanation
“I am” expresses self-recognition before a personal name. Deriving purusha through priority and burning is Vedic interpretive wordplay, not modern etymology. Burning a rival belongs to the historical language of promised ritual benefits, not permission for violence.
English meaning
It became afraid; hence a person alone is afraid. It then reflected, “If there is nothing other than me, what am I afraid of?” Its fear departed through that reflection. What could it have feared? Fear arises from a second.
Context
After self-recognition, the narrative confronts the fear of being alone.
Explanation
Fear is linked here with the presence of a possible other. Reflection on the absence of that duality dissolves fear within the story. This is a philosophical claim, not advice to ignore real danger or an assurance that mental-health difficulties disappear through thought alone.
Passage 4.3
English meaning
It did not find delight; hence one alone does not delight. It desired a second. It was as large as a woman and man in an embrace. It divided its own form in two, and husband and wife came into being. Yajnavalkya used to say, “Thus one’s own form is like half of a split seed.” In this account, the space is filled by the woman. It united with her, and human beings were born.
Context
After fear has been resolved, the desire for another introduces the narrative origin of woman and man.
Explanation
This is an ancient, male-centred creation narrative explaining humankind through partnership and generation. It is not treated as a universal rule that an unmarried person is incomplete or that women exist to fill a man’s lack. The seed image for ardhabrigala is retained cautiously because the precise term is uncertain.
English meaning
The woman reflected, “How can he unite with me after producing me from his own self? Let me hide.” She became a cow and the other a bull; he united with her, and cattle were born. She became a mare and the other a stallion; she became a she-ass and the other a male ass. He united with her, and single-hoofed animals were born. She became a she-goat and the other a male goat; she became a ewe and the other a ram. He united with her, and goats and sheep were born. In this way he produced all paired beings, down to the ants.
Context
The woman’s objection and attempt to hide lead into the creation of different animal pairs.
Explanation
Her objection is explicit and is not rewritten as consent or playfulness. This ancient narrative of pursuit and union is not a moral model for modern relationships. The distinct animals and the extension down to ants are all retained.
Passage 4.5
English meaning
It understood, “I am creation itself, for I have created all this.” Thus it became creation. Whoever knows this finds a place in that creation of its own.
Context
After the generation of animal pairs, the creator recognizes itself as creation.
Explanation
“I am creation” goes beyond being an external maker of objects. It places the relation between the world produced and its source within self-recognition. The closing benefit describes participation in that recognition.
English meaning
Then it churned. From the mouth as a place of generation, and through the hands, it produced fire. Thus both are hairless on the inside, for a place of generation is hairless within. When people say, “Sacrifice to this deity; sacrifice to that one,” each separate deity is an emanation of this being: it is all the gods. Whatever is moist here it created from seed; that is Soma. All this consists of food and the eater of food. Soma is food, and fire its eater. This is brahman’s creation beyond itself, for it created gods superior to itself and, though mortal, produced the immortals. Hence this is called an exceeding creation. One who knows this finds a place in that creation.
Context
The creation account moves beyond animal pairs to fire, Soma and the gods.
Explanation
The distinction between eater and food is expressed through fire and Soma. Brahman is also spoken of here as a mortal creator; a later philosophical definition should not be imposed uniformly on every occurrence. The account of hairless surfaces belongs to the bodily imagery, not a verified anatomical explanation.
Passage 4.7
English meaning
At that time all this was undifferentiated. It became differentiated through name and form: “This is its name; this is its form.” Even now distinctions are made through name and form in that way. It has entered here down to the tips of the nails, like a razor hidden in its case or fire within its receptacle. People do not see it, for it is not displayed in completeness in any single function. When breathing it is called breath; when speaking, speech; when seeing, sight; when hearing, hearing; and when thinking, mind. These are names of its activities. Whoever contemplates only one of them does not know it, for in each separately it is incomplete. It should be contemplated as the self, in which all these become one. This self is the track by which all this can be sought and known. As one finds something through a track, so the knower finds renown and praise.
Context
The account turns from the production of the world to name and form, and the self’s presence in the body.
Explanation
Treating the faculties and activities as separate complete realities is judged insufficient. The track image supplies a direction of inquiry: from the different functions toward their common basis. Identifying Vishvambhara as fire and its kulaya as a receptacle is an interpretation retained for review.
Passage 4.8
English meaning
This self is dearer than a son, dearer than wealth and dearer than everything else, because it is more inward. If someone tells a person who calls something other than the self dear, “What you hold dear will perish,” that may indeed happen. One should therefore contemplate the self as dear. For one who contemplates the self as dear, what is dear does not perish.
Context
After identifying the self as the basis of activities, the text makes it the inward centre of what is dear.
Explanation
The argument contrasts the perishing of external loved persons and things with the self’s stability. It should not be read as a demand for indifference to others or the supremacy of personal ego. The rendering of rotsyati as perishing is contextual and needs lexical review.
English meaning
People ask: human beings suppose that through knowledge of brahman they will become everything. What, then, did that brahman know by which it became everything?
Context
This brief question prepares the “I am brahman” declaration in the next passage.
Explanation
The question tests the link between knowledge and being all: if knowledge brings completeness, what was the object of brahman’s own knowledge? The answer will concern self-knowledge rather than an external object.
Passage 4.10
English meaning
In the beginning this was brahman. It knew itself: “I am brahman.” Through that it became everything. Whichever of the gods recognized this became that; so too among seers and human beings. Seeing this, the seer Vamadeva realized, “I became Manu and the sun.” Even now, one who knows “I am brahman” becomes all this. Even the gods cannot prevent that attainment, for the knower becomes their self. But one who worships another deity thinking “That one is separate, and I am separate” does not know. Such a person is like an animal belonging to the gods. Just as many animals support a human being, each human supports the gods. Losing even one animal is unwelcome, much more many. Thus the gods do not welcome human beings coming to know this.
Context
The answer to the preceding question is brahman’s recognition of itself, the setting of the famous great saying.
Explanation
The “I” here is not a claim of personal superiority but recognition of the self as not separate from brahman. The animal-and-owner analogy sharply criticizes ritual dependence on the gods. It is not used to demean present-day worshippers or communities. Vamadeva’s declaration is quoted as a seer’s realization.
English meaning
At first brahman was alone. Alone, it could not develop its power. It brought forth a superior form, kshatra, ruling authority: the divine powers called Indra, Varuna, Soma, Rudra, Parjanya, Yama, Death and Ishana. Thus the text says there is nothing above kshatra. At the royal consecration a brahmin therefore honours the kshatriya from a lower seat, placing glory in ruling authority. Yet brahman is the source of kshatra. Even when a king reaches supremacy, he ultimately relies on brahman as his own source. One who harms it harms their own source and incurs evil, as does someone who injures a superior.
Context
After the identity of brahman and self, the text turns to the origin of social and divine authority.
Explanation
Seating at the royal consecration illustrates the relation between royal and brahminical ritual authority. This is an internal account of a historical varna-based order, not evidence for present-day superiority or entitlement by birth.
Passage 4.12
English meaning
Still it did not attain sufficient power. It created the vish, the people: the divine groups collectively called Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, Vishve Devas and Maruts.
Context
After ruling authority, the text supplies a divine counterpart for the collective people.
Explanation
Vish denotes a collective people and will be connected with vaishya in the subsequent sequence. The emphasis on groups distinguishes the people from individual ruling figures. This is an ancient social classification, not a criterion for modern citizenship.
Passage 4.13
English meaning
Still it did not attain sufficient power. It created the shudra class as Pushan. This earth is Pushan, for it nourishes everything that exists here.
Context
The account of social origins links the nourishment of Pushan and earth with the shudra class.
Explanation
Nourishing explains the name Pushan. The explicit reference to varna is retained rather than erased, but it is not converted into support for inherited inferiority or compulsory service.
Passage 4.14
English meaning
Still it did not attain sufficient power. It brought forth a still superior form, dharma. Dharma is the ruling power of ruling power; there is nothing above it. Through dharma even the weaker person hopes to prevail over the stronger, as with the support of a king. What is dharma is truth. Hence people say of someone speaking truth, “That person speaks dharma,” and of someone speaking dharma, “That person speaks truth.” These two are indeed the same.
Context
The account reaches another level by placing dharma above ruling authority and the social groups.
Explanation
Dharma here is a norm governing power. The weaker person’s hope indicates that force alone does not supply legitimacy. Its identification with truth concludes the passage; it is not a literal account of any present-day legal system.
Passage 4.15
English meaning
Thus there are brahman, kshatra, vish and shudra. Among the gods brahman became manifest as fire, and among humans as the brahmin; through the kshatriya as kshatriya, through the vaishya as vaishya, and through the shudra as shudra. People therefore seek a world through fire among the gods and through the brahmin among humans, for brahman appeared in these two forms. But one who departs this world without seeing their own world receives no benefit from that unknown world, just as from an unrecited Veda or an unperformed act. Even great meritorious action by one who lacks this knowledge eventually runs out. One should contemplate the self as one’s world. The action of someone who does so does not run out, for from this self they produce whatever they desire.
Context
After summarizing the origin of the classes, the discussion returns to self-knowledge and the results of action.
Explanation
Knowing the ritual and social forms does not replace knowing one’s own world, the self. The Veda-and-action analogy emphasizes knowledge made effective. The historical claims about social positions are recorded without endorsing their authority today.
English meaning
This self is a world for all beings. Through offering and sacrifice it is a world for the gods; through Vedic recitation, for the seers; through offerings to ancestors and the desire for offspring, for the ancestors. Through lodging people and giving them food, it is a world for humans; through obtaining grass and water for animals, for animals. Wild creatures, birds and beings down to ants live from what is in its household, and so it is their world. Just as one wishes one’s own world to remain unharmed, all beings always wish such a knower to remain unharmed. This is something known and considered.
Context
After the self is called one’s own world, it is considered as a dwelling and support for others.
Explanation
Loka here is not only a place after death; it is also a sphere of livelihood and shelter. Gods, seers, ancestors, guests, animals and small creatures belong to a network of support. The promise of all beings’ goodwill praises reciprocal nourishment, rather than guaranteeing that harm can never occur.
Passage 4.17
English meaning
In the beginning the self was alone. It desired, “May I have a wife, produce offspring, possess wealth and perform action.” The text calls this the extent of desire: even wishing, one would find nothing beyond it. Even now a person alone desires wife, offspring, wealth and action, and regards himself as incomplete until each is obtained. Here too is his completeness: mind is his self; speech his wife; breath his offspring; sight his human wealth, for through sight he obtains it; hearing his divine wealth, for through hearing he receives it; and the body his action, for with the body he acts. This sacrifice is fivefold, the animal is fivefold, the person is fivefold, and everything here is fivefold. One who knows this obtains all this.
Context
The fourth brahmana closes by relating a householder’s desires to an inner arrangement of mind, speech, breath and body.
Explanation
The language describes an ancient male householder ideal, not mandatory goals for every human life. Human and divine wealth are two aspects of one position in the scheme; self, spouse, offspring, wealth and action make five. Pankta evokes a fivefold structure and the ritual associations of the Pankti metre.

Context
