English meaning
All this has three aspects: name, form and action. For names, speech is their uktha, the source from which they arise, since all names arise from it. It is their Saman, for it extends equally through all names. It is their brahman, for it supports all names.
Context
The chapter’s final brahmana begins a threefold summary through name, form and action.
Explanation
The ritual terms uktha, Saman and brahman are explained through arising, equal extension and support. Rather than treating each name separately, the passage identifies their common basis in speech.
English meaning
For forms, sight is their uktha, for all forms arise from it. It is their Saman, for it relates equally to all forms. It is their brahman, for it supports all forms.
Context
After names and speech, the same three descriptions are applied to forms and sight.
Explanation
Calling sight the basis of forms concerns the experience of seeing. It need not be converted into a physical claim that an external object ceases to exist in the absence of an eye. The base’s sarvai rupaih is analyzed as sarvaih rupaih.
English meaning
For actions, the self is their uktha, for all actions arise from it. It is their Saman, for it relates equally to all actions. It is their brahman, for it supports all actions. Though this is three, it is one: this self. Though the self is one, it is this three. The deathless is covered by the true: vital power is the deathless, while name and form are the true. By those two this vital power is covered.
Context
After name and form, the ground of action brings the first chapter to its conclusion in the relation between one and three.
Explanation
Atman here also serves as the basis of the active bodily complex. Name and form are called satyam at the close, not simply false. Turning the covered deathless into “everything visible is a lie” would therefore go beyond the passage. The conclusion directs attention to vital power within name and form.
