English meaning
Prajapati’s offspring were of two kinds, gods and Asuras. The gods were fewer and the Asuras more numerous. They competed for these worlds. The gods said, “Come, let us surpass the Asuras through the udgitha in the sacrifice.”
Context
The text now shifts from the creation account surrounding the ashvamedha to Saman chanting and the udgitha.
Explanation
Udgitha is a ritual portion of Saman chanting. The contest will be interpreted through the powers of the senses and breath. The numerical imbalance belongs to the story, not to a comparison between present-day communities.
Passage 3.2
English meaning
They asked speech, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. Whatever enjoyment comes through speech, it sang for the gods; whatever good it says, it reserved for itself. The Asuras understood, “Through this chanter they will surpass us.” They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. That evil is precisely its saying what is unsuitable; this is its corruption.
Context
The first attempt, involving speech.
Explanation
Speech sings for the gods’ shared benefit but reserves beautiful utterance for itself. Improper speech is the visible form of the corruption that enters this faculty.
Passage 3.3
English meaning
They asked the breathing faculty associated with smell, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. Whatever enjoyment comes through smell, it sang for the gods; whatever good it smells, it reserved for itself. The Asuras understood, “Through this chanter they will surpass us.” They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. That evil is precisely its smelling what is unsuitable; this is its corruption.
Context
After speech, the attempt involving the perception of smell.
Explanation
Prana here is associated with smelling. It should not be collapsed without distinction into the oral or central vital power that later rescues the other faculties.
Passage 3.4
English meaning
They asked sight, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. Whatever enjoyment comes through sight, it sang for the gods; whatever good it sees, it reserved for itself. The Asuras understood, “Through this chanter they will surpass us.” They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. That evil is precisely its seeing what is unsuitable; this is its corruption.
Context
The third attempt, through sight.
Explanation
The test of sight follows the first two attempts. The unsuitable or disagreeable aspect of what is seen is explained as corruption affecting sight.
Passage 3.5
English meaning
They asked hearing, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. Whatever enjoyment comes through hearing, it sang for the gods; whatever good it hears, it reserved for itself. The Asuras understood, “Through this chanter they will surpass us.” They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. That evil is precisely its hearing what is unsuitable; this is its corruption.
Context
The fourth attempt, through hearing.
Explanation
This is a narrative picture of hearing’s limitation. Hearing an unsuitable sound is not simply a moral fault; it also shows that a sense faculty is open to both pleasant and unpleasant experience.
Passage 3.6
English meaning
They asked mind, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. Whatever enjoyment comes through mind, it sang for the gods; whatever good it conceives, it reserved for itself. The Asuras understood, “Through this chanter they will surpass us.” They rushed upon it and pierced it with evil. That evil is precisely its conceiving what is unsuitable; this is its corruption. In this way they afflicted these deities with corruptions and pierced them with evil.
Context
The attempt of mind closes the unsuccessful trials of the individual faculties.
Explanation
Mind too chants while reserving favourable thought for itself, but cannot escape corruption. Victory does not come through a single mental or sensory activity; the story will turn to the vital power that sustains them.
Passage 3.7
English meaning
They then asked this vital power situated in the mouth, “Sing the udgitha for us.” It agreed and sang for them. The Asuras realized that this chanter would enable the gods to surpass them. They rushed at it and tried to pierce it with evil. Like a clod of earth shattering against a stone, they broke apart and perished in every direction. The gods prevailed and the Asuras were defeated. One who knows this prospers personally, while the hostile rival is overcome.
Context
After five failed trials, the vital power in the mouth becomes the successful chanter.
Explanation
The clod-and-stone image reverses the attack: the attempt to corrupt breath destroys the attackers. Bhratrivya means a rival, not necessarily a literal brother. The final defeat of an enemy is an ancient statement of the knowledge’s reward, not advice to harm a person.
Passage 3.8
English meaning
They asked, “Where was the one who helped us in this way?” The answer was, “Here, within the mouth.” It is therefore called Ayasya Angirasa, for it is the essence of the limbs.
Context
After their victory the gods identify the power that protected them.
Explanation
The text explains the names through asya, mouth, and anganam rasah, the essence of the limbs. This is Vedic interpretation of names. Ayasya Angirasa is also a seer’s name, but here that name identifies the vital power.
Passage 3.9
English meaning
This deity is also called Dur, because death is far from it. Death is far from the person who knows this in that way.
Context
After Ayasya and Angirasa, another designation of the vital power is explained.
Explanation
The similarity between Dur and duram, “far,” connects breath with distance from death. It explains the power’s invulnerability within the story, rather than making a scientific claim that a human body can become immortal.
English meaning
That deity removed the corruption, death, from the other deities and carried it to the ends of the directions. It deposited their corruptions there. Hence the text says not to approach that people or go to the boundary, lest one follow after corruption and death.
Context
The protecting vital power now carries away the corruption that had entered the faculties.
Explanation
The directional boundary is the destination in a ritual imagination of removing pollution. Janam is understood here as people at the margins, but the passage supplies no modern ethnic identification. The rendering records a historical exclusionary idea without endorsing present-day avoidance of a community.
Passage 3.11
English meaning
Having removed corruption, death, from these deities, that deity carried them beyond death.
Context
The removal of corruption is followed by a five-part account of carrying the faculties beyond death.
Explanation
Removing corruption and carrying beyond death are distinct actions. The following passages connect each individual faculty with a corresponding cosmic deity.
English meaning
It carried speech across first. When speech was released from death, it became fire. This fire shines beyond death, having passed beyond it.
Context
Speech, the first faculty to fail, is the first to be carried beyond death.
Explanation
The association of speech with fire belongs to Vedic correspondences between body and cosmos. The passage concerns recognition of the faculty in a wider divine form, not ordinary sound physically turning into fire.
Passage 3.13
English meaning
Next it carried the breathing faculty across. Released from death, it became wind. This wind blows beyond death, having passed beyond it.
Context
After speech and fire, the breathing faculty associated with smell is connected with wind.
Explanation
The prana being carried is the earlier limited faculty associated with smell; the protecting prana is the one carrying it across. The same word appears in different narrative roles and should not erase that distinction.
Passage 3.14
English meaning
Next it carried sight across. When sight was released from death, it became the sun. That sun gives heat beyond death, having passed beyond it.
Context
The limited faculty of vision is now connected with the cosmic form of the sun.
Explanation
The sun illuminates the visible world and thus serves as the divine counterpart of sight. It was the horse’s eye in the first brahmana; the correspondence returns here within the account of the faculties’ release.
English meaning
Next it carried hearing across. When hearing was released from death, it became the directions. These directions have passed beyond death.
Context
After sight and sun comes the association between hearing and directions.
Explanation
The cosmic counterpart of hearing is not a single object but the directions extending around it. The translation retains the movement from singular hearing to plural directions.
Passage 3.16
English meaning
Next it carried mind across. Released from death, it became the moon. That moon shines beyond death, having passed beyond it. In the same way this deity carries beyond death the person who knows this.
Context
The relation between mind and moon completes the transformation of the five faculties.
Explanation
The final sentence extends the narrative event to a promised result for the knower. Passing beyond death is religious language of release, not a direct technique for preventing bodily death.
English meaning
It then sang food and the power to eat for itself. Whatever food is eaten is eaten through this power and comes to rest here.
Context
After rescuing the faculties, the vital power wins nourishment for itself.
Explanation
Annadyam suggests both food and the ability to enjoy or consume it. The other faculties will ask for a share in this nourishment in the next passage, establishing the vital power’s central role.
Passage 3.18
English meaning
The deities said, “All of this is food, and you sang it for yourself. Give us a share in it.” It answered, “Then gather around me.” They agreed and seated themselves all around it. Thus the food eaten through this power satisfies these faculties. In the same way, the relatives and dependants of one who knows this gather around that person, who becomes their provider, foremost member, leader, eater of food and head. Whoever tries to rival such a knower among their own people is unable to support dependants. But one who follows that person and seeks to support dependants in accordance with them is able to do so.
Context
The deities’ request for food turns the relation between vital power and faculties into a social analogy.
Explanation
Bharya here means those who must be supported, not only a wife. Nourishment flowing from one centre to many faculties is explained through an ancient ideal of household leadership. The rival’s failure belongs to the promised reward of knowledge, not an endorsement of one person’s unquestionable authority in a modern organization.
Passage 3.19
English meaning
It is Ayasya Angirasa, because it is the essence of the limbs. Breath is the essence of the limbs; indeed, breath is the essence of the limbs. Whatever limb the vital power leaves withers. It is therefore the essence of the limbs.
Context
After the distribution of food, the explanation of the name Angirasa returns.
Explanation
The selected witness states twice in succession that breath is the essence of the limbs; both statements are retained. A limb’s withering is an ancient illustration of life’s relation to the body, not a rule for diagnosing disease.
English meaning
This is Brihaspati. Speech is Brihati, and this is its lord; hence the name Brihaspati.
Context
The vital power is now identified through names connected with Vedic utterance and its divinities.
Explanation
Brihati can evoke both a Vedic metre and expansive speech. Pati means its lord or presiding power. The name expresses speech’s dependence on breath, not an astronomical explanation of the planet Jupiter.
English meaning
This is Brahmanaspati. Speech is brahman, the sacred utterance, and this is its lord; hence Brahmanaspati.
Context
The name Brahmanaspati is explained in parallel with Brihaspati.
Explanation
Brahman here foregrounds sacred speech or a ritual utterance. Elsewhere the Upanishad uses the same word for ultimate reality, but forcing that sense into every occurrence would obscure this passage’s specific connection with speech.
English meaning
This is Saman. Speech is “sa,” and this vital power is “ama”; the conjunction of sa and ama explains Saman. Or it is equal in a tiny insect, a mosquito, an elephant, these three worlds and all this; for that reason too it is Saman. Whoever knows Saman in this way attains union with it and a place in its world.
Context
After Brahmanaspati, two verbal explanations connect the vital power with Saman.
Explanation
The first explanation represents the combination of speech and vital power through sa and ama. The second connects Saman with sama, equality, to describe a shared vital basis in beings of different sizes. Plushi is rendered as a small insect without asserting a precise species.
Passage 3.23
English meaning
This is the udgitha. Breath is “ut,” for all this is upheld by breath. Speech is “githa.” Ut and githa together are udgitha.
Context
After Saman, the text explains the udgitha portion of that chant.
Explanation
Ut is linked with the breath that holds things up, and githa with singing speech. Udgitha is therefore understood not simply as a sound but as the joint work of life and speech that makes the sound possible.
Passage 3.24
English meaning
On this point Brahmadatta Caikitaneya, while drinking Soma the king, declared, “If Ayasya Angirasa sang the udgitha through anything other than this vital power, may this king strike off that person’s head.” For he sang through both speech and breath.
Context
An ancient ritual declaration reinforces the account of udgitha as speech together with breath.
Explanation
The king here is Soma; the passage is not about eating a human king. The head-falling curse expresses the force of a ritual assertion of truth. Its violent wording is not concealed, but it is not a direction to a reader to commit violence.
English meaning
Whoever knows the “own wealth” of this Saman obtains wealth. Its tone is its own wealth. A person about to serve as an officiating priest should therefore seek tone in the voice and perform the priestly role with a voice possessing it. Hence at a sacrifice people want to see someone with a good voice, and someone who possesses resources. One who knows this wealth of Saman obtains wealth.
Context
The importance of vocal tone is linked to the resemblance between sva, one’s possessions, and svara, tone.
Explanation
Svara includes the quality and tuneful production of the voice. Artvijya is the function of an officiant in a ritual. Wealth is a traditional promised benefit, not a guaranteed plan for earning money through singing.
English meaning
Whoever knows the gold of this Saman obtains gold. Its tone is its gold. One who knows Saman’s gold in this way obtains gold.
Context
The play on sva and svara is followed by a parallel association of suvarna and svara.
Explanation
Gold becomes an image for the excellence and value of the chant. The passage also speaks of obtaining gold as a reward, so that claim is retained in translation, without presenting it as a modern financial assurance.
Passage 3.27
English meaning
Whoever knows the support of this Saman becomes established. Speech is its support, for this vital power is sung while resting in speech. Some, however, say that its support is food.
Context
After the chant’s wealth and gold, the text considers the basis upon which it rests.
Explanation
The main statement names speech as the support, then preserves the view of some teachers that the support is food. This internal difference matters and is not blended into one supposedly unanimous conclusion.
Passage 3.28
English meaning
Now comes the ascent associated with the Pavamana chants. The Prastotri begins the Saman. When he begins, these words are to be recited: “Lead me from the unreal to the real; lead me from darkness to light; lead me from death to the deathless.” In saying “from the unreal to the real,” the reciter means: the unreal is death and the real is the deathless; lead me from death to the deathless, make me deathless. “From darkness to light” has the same explanation: darkness is death and light is the deathless; lead me from death to the deathless, make me deathless. In “from death to the deathless,” nothing is hidden. In the other hymns the chanter should sing food and the power to eat for himself. In those hymns he should choose whatever desired benefit he seeks. A chanter who knows this sings for whatever benefit he desires, either for himself or for the patron of the sacrifice. This knowledge wins a world. For one who knows this Saman, there is no prospect of being left without a world.
Context
The brahmana on vital power and udgitha ends with the full ritual setting of the well-known “asato ma” prayer.
Explanation
The three requests are often quoted alone, but the passage itself explains the first two through death and the deathless. Asat and sat are therefore not reduced here to an ethical contrast between lying and truthfulness. Prastotri, Udgatri and yajamana are distinct ritual roles. The concluding references to food and desired benefits are retained; omitting them would turn the passage into an incomplete, purely abstract statement.
Context
The text now shifts from the creation account surrounding the ashvamedha to Saman chanting and the udgitha.
