English meaning
Then Kahola Kaushitakeya asked, “Yajnavalkya, explain the immediately present, non-remote brahman, the Self within everything.” “This is your innermost Self.” “Which is innermost?” “That which passes beyond hunger and thirst, grief and delusion, ageing and death. Knowing this Self, Brahmins rise beyond the desire for sons, wealth and worlds, and live by begging. The desire for sons is bound up with the desire for wealth, and the desire for wealth with the desire for worlds; both are indeed desires. Therefore, having thoroughly understood learning, a Brahmin should seek to remain in childlike simplicity. Having passed beyond both simplicity and learning, one becomes contemplative; having passed beyond both non-silence and silence, one is a Brahmin. In what manner would that Brahmin be? In whatever manner, one remains such a knower. Whatever is other than this is afflicted.” Kahola Kaushitakeya then fell silent.
Explanation
The passage speaks within a historical Brahmin renunciant tradition, not a universal instruction to abandon family today.
