“भूमि, अन्तरिक्ष, द्यौ” इन शब्दों के आठ अक्षर हैं। गायत्री का एक पद भी आठ अक्षरों का है। यही उसका वह पद है। जो उसके इस पद को इस प्रकार जानता है, वह इन तीन लोकों में जितना कुछ है, उतना सब जीतता है।
English meaning
The words “earth, intermediate region, heaven” are counted as eight syllables. One foot of Gayatri also has eight syllables. This is that foot of hers. Whoever knows this foot in this way wins all that is contained within these three worlds.
संदर्भ
यह गायत्री की उपासना के आठ अनुच्छेदों का आरम्भ है। पहला पद तीन लोकों से सम्बन्धित किया जाता है।
Context
This begins eight passages on contemplating Gayatri. The first foot is correlated with the three worlds.
व्याख्या
पद का छन्द में चरण और रूपक में आधार या पैर, दोनों अर्थ आगे काम करेंगे। यहाँ तीन लोकों के नाम और गायत्री के आठ-अक्षरी पद की संख्या से सम्बन्ध बनाया गया है। अक्षर-गणना वैदिक उच्चारण की समस्या है; साधारण आधुनिक वर्तनी से नई गणना लागू नहीं की गई है।
Explanation
Pada will function both as a metrical foot and as a figurative support or foot. Here the three world names are related numerically to Gayatri’s eight-syllable foot. The count involves Vedic pronunciation and has not been replaced by a fresh count based only on modern spelling.
Passage 41.2
English meaning
The words “rcah, yajumshi, samani,” referring to verses, sacrificial formulas and chants, have eight syllables. One foot of Gayatri also has eight syllables. This is that foot of hers. Whoever knows this foot in this way wins the full extent of this threefold sacred learning.
संदर्भ
पहले पद के तीन लोकों के बाद दूसरा पद वैदिक विद्या के तीन रूपों से सम्बन्धित है।
Context
After the three worlds associated with the first foot, the second foot is related to three forms of Vedic learning.
व्याख्या
ऋचाएँ, यज्ञ-मन्त्र और सामगान को अलग रखते हुए त्रयी विद्या का पूरा समूह सामने आता है। पाठ की आवृत्ति हर पद के साथ एक नया क्षेत्र जोड़ती है, इसलिए उसे संक्षेप में हटाया नहीं गया है।
Explanation
Verses, sacrificial formulas and sung chants remain distinct members of the threefold learning. The repeated structure assigns a new domain to each foot and is therefore retained rather than summarized away.
English meaning
The words “prana, apana, vyana” are counted as eight syllables. One foot of Gayatri also has eight syllables. This is that foot of hers. Whoever knows this foot in this way wins the whole extent of living beings. Then there is her fourth, visible foot, beyond the expanse: this sun that shines. What is fourth is called turiya. It is called the visible foot because it appears, as it were, before sight. It is called parorajas because it shines high above the whole celestial expanse. Whoever knows this foot in this way likewise shines with splendour and renown.
संदर्भ
तीसरा पद प्राण की तीन गतियों और जीवित जगत् से जुड़ता है। इसी अनुच्छेद में सामान्य तीन पदों से आगे सूर्यरूप चौथा पद जोड़ा जाता है।
Context
The third foot is connected with three vital functions and the living world. This passage then adds a solar fourth foot beyond the usual three.
Explanation
The passage itself glosses turiya as “fourth”; it is not automatically the state of consciousness described in another text. Parorajas names the sun’s position beyond the expanse, not necessarily the rajas of a later theory of qualities. The three vital functions form a contemplative correspondence, not a breathing exercise.
English meaning
This Gayatri is established in that fourth, visible foot beyond the expanse. That foot is established in truth. Sight is truth; sight is indeed truth. Therefore, if two disputants were to come now, one saying “I saw” and the other “I heard,” we would place our trust in the one who said “I saw.” That truth is established in strength. Breath is strength; it is established in breath. Thus people say, “Strength is mightier than truth.” In this way Gayatri is established within the person. She protected the gayas. The vital powers are the gayas; thus she protected the vital powers. Because she protected the gayas, her name is Gayatri. The Savitri that a teacher recites is this very Gayatri. For the one to whom it is recited, she protects the vital powers.
संदर्भ
चौथे पद के आधार से प्रश्न आगे बढ़ता है: उसका आधार सत्य, सत्य का आधार बल और बल प्राण है। अन्त में गायत्री की सावित्री-शिक्षा से पहचान की जाती है।
Context
The inquiry proceeds through supports: the fourth foot rests on truth, truth on strength, and strength is breath. The passage closes by identifying Gayatri with the Savitri taught in recitation.
व्याख्या
देखना और सुनना यहाँ साक्ष्य के उदाहरण हैं; यह हर परिस्थिति में प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव को अचूक बताने का आधुनिक नियम नहीं है। बल को प्राण कहने से “बल सत्य से बड़ा” का अर्थ जीवन-आधार की ओर जाता है, हिंसा को सत्य पर अधिकार देना नहीं। गय और त्राण की व्युत्पत्ति उपासनात्मक है।
Explanation
Seeing and hearing are examples of testimony here, not a modern rule that direct perception is infallible. Since strength is identified with breath, “strength is mightier than truth” concerns the support provided by life, not a license for force to override truth. The derivation through gaya and protection is contemplative wordplay.
Passage 41.5
English meaning
Some teach that Savitri in the Anustubh metre, saying, “Speech is Anustubh, so we teach speech.” The text says not to do this, but to teach Savitri in the Gayatri metre. Even if a person who knows in this way accepts what seems a great quantity of gifts, all of it does not equal even a single foot of Gayatri.
संदर्भ
सावित्री की शिक्षा का उल्लेख अब छन्द के चयन पर परम्परा के भीतर मतभेद लाता है। इसके बाद दान ग्रहण करने की चर्चा शुरू होती है।
Context
The mention of teaching Savitri introduces a disagreement within the tradition over the metre to use. The passage then turns to accepting gifts.
व्याख्या
यह ऐतिहासिक शिक्षण-परम्परा गायत्री छन्द को अनुष्टुभ् पर प्राथमिकता देती है। दान की मात्रा की तुलना ज्ञान के पद से की जा रही है। इसे किसी भी प्रकार की संपत्ति ग्रहण करने की आधुनिक नैतिक या कानूनी छूट नहीं माना गया है।
Explanation
This historical teaching tradition gives the Gayatri metre priority over Anustubh. The quantity of gifts is then measured against a foot of knowledge. It is not a modern ethical or legal exemption permitting unrestricted acceptance of wealth.
English meaning
If someone were to receive these three worlds in their entirety as gifts, that would reach the measure of Gayatri’s first foot. If someone were to receive as much as the entire extent of the threefold sacred learning, that would reach her second foot. If someone were to receive as much as the whole realm of living beings, that would reach her third foot. But her fourth, visible foot beyond the expanse, this shining sun, cannot be reached by anything of that kind. How, then, could anyone receive gifts on such a scale?
संदर्भ
पिछले अनुच्छेद की दान-तुलना अब तीन क्रमिक, असम्भव रूप से विशाल मात्राओं में खुलती है। चौथा पद उन सबकी सीमा से बाहर है।
Context
The previous comparison with gifts unfolds into three impossibly large measures. The fourth foot lies beyond them all.
व्याख्या
तीन लोक, त्रयी विद्या और समस्त प्राणी पहले तीन पदों के पूर्वनिर्दिष्ट क्षेत्रों को फिर दोहराते हैं। ग्रहण करने की काल्पनिक मात्रा गायत्री-ज्ञान की महिमा बताती है; किसी व्यक्ति को प्राणियों या लोकों पर वास्तविक स्वामित्व देने का आशय नहीं लिया गया है।
Explanation
The three worlds, threefold learning and all living beings repeat the domains previously assigned to the first three feet. The hypothetical scale of receiving gifts praises knowledge of Gayatri; it is not read as granting actual ownership of beings or worlds.
Passage 41.7
English meaning
Her invocation is this: “Gayatri, you are one-footed, two-footed, three-footed, O four-footed one! You are without feet, for you cannot be reached. Homage to your fourth, visible foot beyond the expanse.” It may then say, “May that person not attain that.” Or, concerning someone one hates, “May that person’s desire not succeed.” The text claims that the desire of a person against whom this invocation is made does not succeed. Alternatively, one may say for oneself, “May I attain that.”
संदर्भ
गायत्री के पदों की व्याख्या के बाद उपस्थान का मन्त्र और उसके अनुष्ठानिक उपयोग दिए गए हैं। उनमें विरोधी की इच्छा रोकना और अपनी इच्छा पूर्ण होने की कामना, दोनों हैं।
Context
After the account of Gayatri’s feet, the text supplies an invocation and ritual applications. These include obstructing an adversary’s wish as well as seeking one’s own attainment.
व्याख्या
यहाँ शत्रु या द्वेष-पात्र के विरुद्ध प्रयुक्त ऐतिहासिक अनुष्ठान की भाषा को हटाया नहीं गया है। उसे आज किसी पर प्रयोग करने के निर्देश या सफलता के वास्तविक वादे के रूप में न लें। एक से चार पद और फिर पदरहित होना छन्द, रूपक और अप्राप्यता के अर्थों को साथ रखता है।
Explanation
The historical ritual language directed against an enemy or hated person has not been removed. It should not be treated as present-day instructions for targeting anyone or as a real guarantee of success. Having one through four feet and then none combines metre, imagery and the idea of being beyond reach.
Passage 41.8
English meaning
On this subject Janaka of Videha said to Budila Asvatarasvi, “You did say you knew Gayatri. Why, then, are you carrying loads as an elephant?” He replied, “Your Majesty, I did not know her mouth.” Fire is her mouth. Even when what seems a great amount is put into fire, it burns it all. In the same way, the text declares, even if such a knower commits what seems a great amount of evil, after consuming it all that person becomes clean, purified, free from ageing and immortal.
संदर्भ
गायत्री-प्रकरण का समापन जनक और बुडिल के छोटे संवाद से होता है। केवल पदों का ज्ञान पर्याप्त नहीं बताया जाता; अग्निरूप मुख का ज्ञान भी अपेक्षित है।
Context
The Gayatri section ends with a short exchange between Janaka and Budila. Knowing the feet is presented as insufficient without also knowing the fiery mouth.
व्याख्या
हाथी का बोझ ढोना और अग्नि का सब कुछ भस्म करना कथा की तीखी छवियाँ हैं। पाप के भस्म होने तथा अमरता का दावा उपासना की ऐतिहासिक प्रशंसा है। इसे गलत काम करने की अनुमति, उत्तरदायित्व से छूट या शारीरिक अमरता का प्रमाण नहीं बनाया गया है।
Explanation
The burden-bearing elephant and all-consuming fire are pointed images in the story. The burning away of evil and the claim of immortality are historical praise of contemplation. They are not permission for wrongdoing, exemption from responsibility, or evidence of bodily immortality.
संदर्भ
यह गायत्री की उपासना के आठ अनुच्छेदों का आरम्भ है। पहला पद तीन लोकों से सम्बन्धित किया जाता है।
Context
This begins eight passages on contemplating Gayatri. The first foot is correlated with the three worlds.
