English meaning

Context
The honey teaching begins with reciprocity between earth and beings.

Explanation
Earth is not merely an object for beings: beings in turn are its honey. The radiant person of the earth and that of the individual body are brought together in one Self. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Context
The earth/body pair is followed by waters and generative fluid.
Explanation
Raitasa derives from retas, generative fluid; replacing it with mind or generic radiance would erase the bodily correspondence. The pairing is contemplative, not reproductive medicine. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Explanation
Vangmaya means constituted by speech. The Vedic connection between fire and speech is used here to present both as expressions of the same Self. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Explanation
Wind and breathing share a familiar movement, but the teaching is not limited to a physical resemblance. Their radiant, immortal person is identified with one Self. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Explanation
Sunlight and the eye’s ability to see are related. Calling them honey goes beyond usefulness toward the unity of their cosmic and individual person. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Explanation
Shrautra concerns hearing; pratishrutka evokes echo or answering sound. Both are retained rather than reducing the phrase to the ear alone. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Context
The next honey passage correlates the moon with the individual mind.

Explanation
Manasa is the person associated with mind. The lunar/mind correspondence belongs to Vedic symbolism; it is not turned into a modern causal theory of mental illness and lunar phases. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Context
Lightning’s external flash is paired with the individual’s luminous person.
Explanation
Taijasa specifies a relation to inner radiance, while tejomaya is the repeated general description of the person. Both are retained without identifying taijasa with a particular nerve or electrical current. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.

Context
Lightning is followed by thunder and the individual power of sound and voice.
Explanation
Shabda refers to sound more generally, while sauvara concerns vocal tone in particular. The pairing connects external thunder with inward voice; simply rendering both as hearing would erase the contrast with the earlier hearing passage. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.
English meaning
This space is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this space. The radiant, immortal person in this space and the radiant, immortal person within the individual as the space within the heart are this very Self. This is the immortal; this is Brahman; this is everything.
Context
Outer space and the space within the heart form a pair.
Explanation
Heart-space is the inward locus of experience. The relationship between external vastness and inward space is grounded in the Self, not in an astronomical claim about the physical dimensions of the heart. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.
English meaning
This dharma is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this dharma. The radiant, immortal person in this dharma and the radiant, immortal person within the individual as the inward form of dharma are this very Self. This is the immortal; this is Brahman; this is everything.
Context
The list moves from natural powers to dharma, sustaining order and conduct.
Explanation
Dharma here is not simply the name of a religious denomination. Order in the world and its expression in the individual are honey to beings, with the Self as their common basis. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.
English meaning
This truth is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this truth. The radiant, immortal person in this truth and the radiant, immortal person within the individual as the inward form of truth are this very Self. This is the immortal; this is Brahman; this is everything.
Context
After dharma, truth is considered in cosmic and individual aspects.
Explanation
Satya, with a long initial vowel in the derivative adjective, denotes the person related to truth, not a separate proper name. The reciprocity of beings and truth culminates in the identification of Self and Brahman. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.
English meaning
This humankind is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this humankind. The radiant, immortal person in this humankind and the radiant, immortal person within the individual as the individual human being are this very Self. This is the immortal; this is Brahman; this is everything.
Context
The honey teaching now pairs humankind as a whole with the individual human.
Explanation
The first manusham points to the human world collectively and the second manushah to its individual expression. “All beings” is not narrowed to humans; humanity is one member of the wider reciprocity. Honey is a metaphor for reciprocal nourishment and essence.
English meaning
This embodied self is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this embodied self. The radiant, immortal person in this embodied self and this radiant, immortal Self are this very Self. This is the immortal; this is Brahman; this is everything.
Context
The honey litany, which repeatedly concludes with the Self, now takes the self itself as its opening subject.
Explanation
The earlier occurrences of atman are read as the embodied individual and the later occurrence as the inward Self, making sense of the litany’s outer/inner pattern. This distinction is interpretive: the Sanskrit uses atman throughout and does not repeat adhyatmam here.
Passage 11.15
English meaning
This Self is the overlord of all and the king of all beings. As all the spokes are fitted into a chariot wheel’s hub and rim, so all beings, all gods, all worlds, all vital faculties and all these individual selves are joined in this Self.
Context
The honey litany is gathered together through the image of a wheel and its spokes.
Explanation
The original includes the rim as well as the hub; mentioning only the centre would lose half the image. The plural selves expresses individual forms of life, while the singular Self provides their common basis.
English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “Heroes, to win a benefit I proclaim that mighty wondrous deed of yours, as a thundering cloud reveals rain: when Dadhyanch Atharvana spoke the honey teaching to you through a horse’s head.”
Context
The honey teaching is linked to the Vedic story of Dadhyanch and the Ashvins through a Rigvedic quotation.
Explanation
The horse’s head is an explicit extraordinary feature of the narrative and is not hidden behind an abstraction. Sanaye voices the poet’s wish to gain a benefit. The quotation corresponds to Rigveda 1.116.12; the rendering is made independently from that ancient Sanskrit.
English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “Ashvins, you fitted a horse’s head to Dadhich Atharvana. Following truth and sacred order, he spoke to you that honey teaching belonging to Tvashtar, wonder-working ones, which was to be kept secret for you.”
Context
A second Rigvedic quotation specifies the horse’s head and the confidential teaching.
Explanation
Dadhyanch and Dadhich are forms of the same seer’s name. Tvashtra is retained as a relation to Tvashtar without importing further episodes absent from this passage. Ritayan conveys following truth or sacred order.
Passage 11.18
English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “He made two-footed citadels and he made four-footed citadels. Becoming a bird, the person entered those citadels first.” This person dwells in every citadel. Nothing is left uncovered by him; nothing is left unenclosed by him.
Context
The next quotation pictures bodies as citadels and the Self as the person entering them.
Explanation
Two-footed and four-footed citadels evoke human and other animal bodies. The bird pictures mobile, entering life. The wordplay among pur, purusha and purishaya presents the indwelling Self, not a biological evolutionary history.
English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “He became the counterpart of each and every form; that form of his is for recognizing him. Indra moves in many forms through his powers of manifestation; his ten hundreds of tawny horses are yoked.” This very Self is those horses; it is the ten, the thousands, the many and the infinite. This Brahman has nothing before it, nothing after it, nothing other within and nothing outside. This Self is Brahman, the experiencer of all. Such is the instruction.
Context
The honey teaching closes with the single basis of manifold forms and the statement that this Self is Brahman.
Explanation
The verse from Rigveda 6.47.18 describes Indra’s multiple forms; the Upanishad reads it in relation to the Self’s presence in every form. Maya here denotes powers of manifestation, not merely deception. The sequence of ten hundreds, ten, thousands, many and infinite is preserved rather than collapsed into “countless.”
Context
The honey teaching begins with reciprocity between earth and beings.
