English meaning
Janaka of Videha performed a sacrifice with abundant gifts. Brahmins from Kuru and Panchala gathered there. Janaka wished to discover which of them was the most learned in the transmitted Veda. He set apart a thousand cows, with ten padas fastened to the horns of each cow.
Context
The third adhyaya opens at Janaka’s sacrificial assembly.
Explanation
The prize establishes a public contest over learning. Tradition understands the padas as units of gold; the sentence itself does not specify the metal.
Passage 13.2
English meaning
Janaka said, “Revered Brahmins, let whoever among you knows brahman best drive these cows away.” The Brahmins did not dare. Yajnavalkya then told his own student, “Dear Samashravas, drive them away.” The student did so. The Brahmins became angry: “How can he claim to know brahman best among us?” Ashvala, Janaka’s hotri priest, asked him, “Yajnavalkya, are you really the foremost knower of brahman among us?” He replied, “We bow to the foremost knower of brahman. We simply want the cows.” Ashvala thereupon began to question him.
Context
Yajnavalkya’s taking the prize provokes the examination.
Explanation
His reply combines wit and provocation. Rather than assert superiority directly, he acknowledges wanting the cows, leaving his answers to establish his standing.
Passage 13.3
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, when all this is pervaded and overtaken by death, through what does the sacrificer escape death’s grasp?” “Through the officiating hotri, through fire, through speech. Speech is the sacrifice’s hotri. This speech is this fire; it is the hotri. This is release, this is release beyond death.”
Context
Ashvala’s first question concerns sacrifice and death.
Explanation
The answer correlates the ritual priest, the inner power of speech and cosmic fire. Atimukti belongs to this ritual contemplation and should not be treated as the sole Upanishadic definition of liberation.
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, when all this is pervaded and overtaken by day and night, through what does the sacrificer escape their grasp?” “Through the officiating adhvaryu, through the eye, through the sun. The eye is the sacrifice’s adhvaryu. This eye is that sun; it is the adhvaryu. This is release, this is release beyond.”
Context
The second question focuses on the daily cycle of time.
Explanation
Eye and sun are aligned with the adhvaryu’s role. Transcending day and night is a contemplative claim about identification with their cosmic source, not a physical escape from time.
Passage 13.5
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, when all this is pervaded and overtaken by the first and second fortnights, through what does the sacrificer escape their grasp?” “Through the officiating udgatri, through wind, through breath. Breath is the sacrifice’s udgatri. This breath is wind; it is the udgatri. This is release, this is release beyond.”
Context
The inquiry moves from the daily cycle to the two lunar fortnights.
Explanation
The udgatri’s chant depends on breath, whose wider counterpart is wind. The base spelling vayuna is understood as vayuna with the long first vowel in the analytical word list.
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, since this intermediate space seems to offer no support, by what means of ascent does the sacrificer reach the heavenly world?” “Through the officiating brahman priest, through mind, through the moon. Mind is the sacrifice’s brahman priest. This mind is that moon; it is the brahman priest. This is release, this is release beyond.” These are the ways of transcending; now follow the contemplative correspondences.
Context
The correspondences of the four principal priests conclude here.
Explanation
Brahman here names the supervising priest, not the creator deity. Sampad in this context is contemplative correlation, rather than material wealth.
Passage 13.7
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, with how many kinds of verses will the hotri act in this sacrifice today?” “Three.” “Which three?” “The preliminary invitatory verse, the offering verse, and the recited praise as the third.” “What does he win through them?” “Whatever here bears life.”
Context
The questions now concern ritual triads and their results.
Explanation
The three are functional classes of verses, not necessarily only three individual lines in the entire rite. The promised result belongs to the text’s historical ritual worldview.
Passage 13.8
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, how many kinds of offerings will the adhvaryu make in this sacrifice today?” “Three.” “Which three?” “Those that flare up when offered, those that make a loud sound, and those that settle below.” “What does he win through them?” “Through those that flare up he wins the world of the gods, for that world seems radiant. Through those that make a loud sound he wins the world of the ancestors, for that world too is, as it were, intensely so. Through those that settle below he wins the human world, for the human world is, as it were, below.”
Context
Visible and audible effects of offerings are correlated with three worlds.
Explanation
Radiance, sound and settling below provide the analogies. The compressed expression about the ancestors’ world is interpretively difficult; the ancient commentary reads it through the shared feature of loud sound.
Passage 13.9
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, with how many deities does the brahman priest guard the sacrifice from the south today?” “With one.” “Which one?” “Mind alone. Mind is endless, and the All-gods are endless. Through it he wins an endless world.”
Context
The inner basis of the supervising priest’s guardianship is examined.
Explanation
The connection is the boundlessness attributed to mental activity and to the All-gods. “From the south” identifies the priest’s ritual position.
Passage 13.10
English meaning
Ashvala said, “Yajnavalkya, how many kinds of chant-verses will the udgatri sing in this sacrifice today?” “Three.” “Which three?” “The invitatory verse, the offering verse, and the recited praise as the third.” “What are their counterparts within the person?” “Prana is the invitatory verse, apana the offering verse, and vyana the praise.” “What does he win through them?” “The earth-world through the invitatory verse, the intermediate world through the offering verse, and the heavenly world through the praise.” Ashvala the hotri then fell silent.
Context
Ashvala’s examination ends with a triad of vital functions, chant and worlds.
Explanation
Prana, apana and vyana are distinctions within the ancient account of vitality. Their function here is contemplative correlation, not instruction for a breathing exercise.
Context
The third adhyaya opens at Janaka’s sacrificial assembly.
