English meaning
He questioned them with these verses: As a tree, a forest-growth, so indeed is a person; this is no false comparison. The person’s hairs correspond to leaves, and the outer skin to the tree’s peeling bark. Blood flows from the person’s skin as sap bursts through bark. Thus blood comes from a wounded person as sap from a tree that has been struck. The person’s flesh corresponds to the tree’s bark-layers; the firm sinews to its fibrous inner bark. The inner bones correspond to wood, and marrow is compared with the tree’s pith. A felled tree grows again, renewed, from its root. From what root does a mortal, cut down by death, grow again? Do not say “from semen,” for that arises from a living person. A tree also grows from seed: its coming forth again after death is directly possible. If a tree is uprooted with its root, it does not come forth again. From what root does a mortal, cut down by death, grow again? Being already born does not by itself bring another birth: who could bring him forth again? Brahman, awareness and bliss, is the final resort of the giver of gifts, and of the one who stands firmly in it and knows it.
Explanation
The bodily parallels prepare a question rather than establish a complete botanical-anatomical equivalence. Naming seed or semen produced by the living does not settle the root of renewed existence after death. The final statement gives a positive indication of brahman as awareness and bliss. The selected witness repeats the last couplet; a documented transcription repair reads it once. Both original copies remain in the raw evidence. The syntax of ratir datuh and jata eva na jayate remains interpretively difficult.
Context
The chapter’s final question uses the person-tree analogy to ask about the root of birth and death.
