English meaning
There is a verse on this: “From where the sun rises and where it goes to rest.” It rises from vital power and sets in vital power. “The gods made that their law; it is the same today and tomorrow.” What they undertook then they continue to do now. Therefore one should observe a single vow, maintaining the activity of breathing in and out, with the thought that death as evil may not seize one. If one undertakes a vow, one should intend to bring it to completion. Through it one gains union with that deity and a place in its world.
Explanation
The actions of prana and apana are expressed here in the language of a vow. The passage gives no breath-holding duration, strenuous breathing protocol or treatment. Its final concern with completing a vow relates to continuity of an undertaking, not advice to disregard bodily limits.
Context
The inquiry into vows concludes by taking the continuity of vital power as its model.
