English meaning
“The father produced seven foods through intelligence and austerity”: it was indeed through those that he produced them. “One was common”: this is the ordinary food that is eaten. A person who worships only this does not escape corruption, for it is mixed. “Two he allotted to the gods”: the oblation in the fire and the offering otherwise presented. Hence both kinds are offered to the gods. Some say these are the new-moon and full-moon sacrifices; one should therefore not sacrifice merely for oneself. “One he gave to animals”: this is milk, for humans and animals initially live on milk. The text accordingly mentions the custom of giving a newborn clarified butter to lick or putting it to the breast, and calling a newborn calf one not yet eating grass. “In that all is established, breathing and non-breathing”: all is said to rest on milk. People say that offering milk for a year overcomes repeated death; one should not understand it that way. A person who knows this overcomes repeated death on the very day of offering, because they give the gods all nourishment. “Why do the foods not run out though constantly eaten?” The person is the cause of their inexhaustibility, producing food repeatedly. “Whoever knows this inexhaustibility”: the person is inexhaustibility, generating food through thought after thought and through actions. If this were not done, it would run out. “Eats food with the pratika”: the mouth is the pratika; the meaning is eating with the mouth. “Reaches the gods and lives on nourishment”: this is praise.
Explanation
This entire passage describes ancient ritual and infant-care custom, not present-day feeding or treatment advice for a newborn. Overcoming repeated death is likewise the text’s religious claim. The person’s recurring production of food through thought and action explains the continuity of consumption and production. The passage itself finally identifies the promised result as praise.
