English meaning
The year, Prajapati with sixteen parts, is this person who knows it. That person’s wealth is the fifteen parts, and their own self the sixteenth. Through wealth they increase and diminish. The self is the wheel’s hub and wealth its rim. Thus even if all possessions are lost, if the person remains alive, people say only the rim has been lost.
Explanation
The hub-and-rim distinction says that losing wealth is not losing one’s entire existence. It does not make material loss trivial; it distinguishes the living basis from external possessions.
Context
The image of a stable lunar part is now applied to a person and changing possessions.
