स होवाच गार्ग्यः य एवायमप्सु पुरुष एतमेवाहं ब्रह्मोपास इति । स होवाचाजातशत्रुः मा मैतस्मिन्संवदिष्ठाः । प्रतिरूप इति वा अहमेतमुपास इति । स य एतमेवमुपास्ते प्रतिरूपं हैवैनमुपगच्छति नाप्रतिरूपम् । अथो प्रतिरुपोऽस्माज्जायते ॥ ८ ॥

गार्ग्य ने कहा: मैं जल में स्थित इस पुरुष की ही ब्रह्म के रूप में उपासना करता हूँ। अजातशत्रु ने कहा: इस विषय में मुझसे बात मत बढ़ाइए; मैं इसकी उपासना अनुरूप, अनुकूल रूप वाला के रूप में करता हूँ। जो इसकी इस प्रकार उपासना करता है, उसके पास अनुरूप और अनुकूल ही आता है, अननुरूप नहीं; उससे अनुरूप सन्तान भी जन्म लेती है।
English meaning
Gargya said, “I meditate on this person in the waters as Brahman.” Ajatashatru replied, “Do not pursue this account with me; I meditate on it as the fitting or corresponding one.” Whoever meditates on it in this way receives this result: What is fitting comes to that person, not what is unfitting; an offspring corresponding to that person is also born.

प्रतिरूप में समान रूप और अनुकूलता दोनों का संकेत है। जल के प्रतिबिम्ब का विचार सहायक हो सकता है, पर पाठ इस अनुच्छेद में प्रतिबिम्ब शब्द नहीं कहता। फल की दोनों बातें, अनुकूल आगमन और अनुरूप सन्तान, अलग रखी गई हैं।
Explanation
Pratirupa suggests both correspondence in form and suitability. Reflection in water may illuminate the association, but the passage itself does not use the word reflection. Both results are retained: fitting things arrive, and corresponding offspring is born.
