English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “He became the counterpart of each and every form; that form of his is for recognizing him. Indra moves in many forms through his powers of manifestation; his ten hundreds of tawny horses are yoked.” This very Self is those horses; it is the ten, the thousands, the many and the infinite. This Brahman has nothing before it, nothing after it, nothing other within and nothing outside. This Self is Brahman, the experiencer of all. Such is the instruction.
Explanation
The verse from Rigveda 6.47.18 describes Indra’s multiple forms; the Upanishad reads it in relation to the Self’s presence in every form. Maya here denotes powers of manifestation, not merely deception. The sequence of ten hundreds, ten, thousands, many and infinite is preserved rather than collapsed into “countless.”
Context
The honey teaching closes with the single basis of manifold forms and the statement that this Self is Brahman.
