English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “Heroes, to win a benefit I proclaim that mighty wondrous deed of yours, as a thundering cloud reveals rain: when Dadhyanch Atharvana spoke the honey teaching to you through a horse’s head.”
Explanation
The horse’s head is an explicit extraordinary feature of the narrative and is not hidden behind an abstraction. Sanaye voices the poet’s wish to gain a benefit. The quotation corresponds to Rigveda 1.116.12; the rendering is made independently from that ancient Sanskrit.
Context
The honey teaching is linked to the Vedic story of Dadhyanch and the Ashvins through a Rigvedic quotation.
