Passage 11.18
English meaning
This is the honey teaching that Dadhyanch Atharvana told the two Ashvins. Seeing this, the seer said: “He made two-footed citadels and he made four-footed citadels. Becoming a bird, the person entered those citadels first.” This person dwells in every citadel. Nothing is left uncovered by him; nothing is left unenclosed by him.
Explanation
Two-footed and four-footed citadels evoke human and other animal bodies. The bird pictures mobile, entering life. The wordplay among pur, purusha and purishaya presents the indwelling Self, not a biological evolutionary history.
Context
The next quotation pictures bodies as citadels and the Self as the person entering them.
