Sutra 3.1
English meaning
Dharana is the binding of the mind to a particular place or field.
Dharana is the binding of the mind to a particular place or field.
Dhyana is the uninterrupted continuity of a single cognition there.
Dharana established the mind on a selected object. This sutra calls the continuing flow toward that same object dhyana.
Ekatana describes a continuous stream rather than repeatedly broken contact with the object. The definition concerns the quality of attention, not merely time spent sitting.
That same meditation is samadhi when only the object shines forth, as though meditation were empty of its own form.
Following dharana and dhyana, the text defines samadhi. The relationship with the object remains, while the manner of its disclosure changes.
The word iva, ‘as though’, matters: this does not say that the mind is annihilated. Its separate appearance as the knowing activity recedes while the object alone predominates.
The three together on one object constitute samyama.
Dharana, dhyana and samadhi from the preceding three sutras now receive a collective name. Many later sutras describe applications of this samyama.
Samyama is a technical term here, more specific than ordinary self-restraint. It joins the three modes around the same object.
Mastery of that samyama brings the illumination of insight.
Immediately after defining samyama, the text states its fruit. The next sutra turns to its application at successive levels.
The illumination of prajna points to lucid knowing. Jaya here means mastery of samyama rather than victory over other people.
That samyama is to be applied at its various stages or levels.
After mentioning the light of insight, the text speaks of applying samyama by levels. It does not enumerate those levels here.
Bhumi indicates a stage or a field that has become accessible. This brief statement does not imply immediate mastery of every possible object.
These three are inner limbs in comparison with the preceding ones.
The discussion of dharana, dhyana and samadhi now relates them to the preceding five limbs. The next sutra qualifies even this inwardness.
Calling them inner does not make the earlier limbs dispensable. The comparison concerns their more direct involvement in the mind’s concentrated activity.
Yet even that samyama is external in relation to seedless samadhi.
The preceding sutra called the three inner in relation to the earlier limbs. Relative to seedless samadhi, the same samyama is now called external.
Inner and outer are relational terms here. Object-based samyama is not identified with the seedless state.
The transformation of restraint is the mind’s connection with the moment of restraint as the impressions of outward activity subside and those of restraint emerge.
A close account of transformations in the mind begins here. First comes the relationship between impressions as restraint becomes established.
Vyutthana is the mind’s outward activity, while nirodha is its restraint. The sutra describes changing tendencies of impressions, not mere inactivity for a moment.
Its tranquil continuity arises from the corresponding impression.
Continuing the account of restraint-transformation, this sutra explains its continuity. The relevant impression of restraint is central here.
Vahita suggests a continuing stream. This quiet direction of the mind is sustained by the impression corresponding to it.
The mind’s transformation into samadhi is the decline of its many-directedness and the arising of one-pointedness.
After restraint-transformation, the text names and describes samadhi-transformation. It clarifies the change from many objects toward one.
Sarvarthata here means many-directedness, not omniscience. Decline and arising describe the changing balance of two tendencies in the same mind.
Then the mind’s one-pointedness-transformation occurs when the subsided and newly arisen cognitions are alike.
After samadhi-transformation, the continuity of one-pointedness is described more precisely. The focus is the likeness of successive cognitions.
Shanta here denotes the preceding cognition that has subsided. A succeeding cognition of the same object continues the stream without a change of subject.
This also explains transformations of property, temporal characteristic and condition in the elements and the senses.
The account of the mind’s transformations now extends to change in elements and senses. The next sutras discuss the bearer of properties and the order of change.
Dharma concerns a property or form, lakshana its temporal characteristic, and avastha its condition. Dharma does not mean moral duty in this passage.
The bearer of properties is that which persists through properties that have subsided, are manifest, or are not yet definable.
To clarify transformation of properties, the text defines their bearer. It brings out the relationship between changing forms and their underlying continuant.
Avyapadeshya points toward a possible form that cannot yet be specified as manifest. The bearer is not confined to a single present form.
Difference in sequence causes difference in transformation.
After describing the bearer across its properties, the text stresses the order of change. The next sutra applies samyama to this account of transformation.
Even with comparable constituents, their ordering can alter the result. Transformation is therefore more than a list of separate static conditions.
Samyama on the three transformations yields knowledge of the past and the future.
After the transformations of property, temporal characteristic and condition, a sequence of particular fruits of samyama begins. The first is knowledge of past and future.
This is the yoga text’s claim about extraordinary knowledge. It should neither be reduced to ordinary inference nor presented as a prediction guarantee from a present-day service.
Sound, meaning and cognition become confused through their mutual superimposition. Samyama on their distinctness yields knowledge of the utterances of all beings.
Among samyama’s particular fruits, the text now distinguishes sound, its meaning and its cognition. The stated fruit concerns the utterances of all beings.
A heard sound, what it signifies and its mental cognition are three distinguishable aspects. The sutra connects their discrimination with extraordinary understanding of utterances.
Direct realization of impressions yields knowledge of previous births.
After distinguishing sound and cognition, the text turns to latent impressions. Previous births belong to the work’s framework of rebirth.
Sakshatkarana indicates direct realization rather than ordinary recollection. Reducing previous births to a metaphor for habits within this life would not preserve the whole claim.
Samyama on another’s cognition yields knowledge of that person’s mind.
After knowledge of past births, the text states a claim about knowing another mind. The following sutra limits what this knowledge includes.
Samyama is supplied from the ongoing context rather than repeated in the Sanskrit. The next sutra matters because knowing another mind is not said to include every object it holds.
That knowledge does not include the mind’s supporting object, because that object has not become the subject of the samyama.
This directly qualifies the previous sutra’s knowledge of another mind. The mind’s condition and its external object are kept distinct.
Alambana is the object supporting a cognition. Knowing a mental condition does not automatically disclose its entire object or cause.
Through samyama on bodily form, when its perceptibility is arrested and connection with the eye’s light ceases, disappearance occurs.
After the limitation on knowing another mind, the text describes a siddhi concerning bodily visibility. It then turns to karma and knowledge of life’s end.
The claim uses the text’s philosophical vocabulary of perceptibility and sight. It is not evidence for a modern optical mechanism or physical instructions for becoming invisible.
Karma may bear fruit promptly or only later. Samyama on it, or ominous signs, yields knowledge of the end of life.
After the statement about bodily visibility, the discussion turns to the course of karmic fruition. It connects this with a traditional claim of knowing the end of life.
Sopakrama and nirupakrama distinguish the pace at which karmic results manifest. Arishta refers to traditional ominous signs, not a service for assessing anyone’s death.
Samyama on friendliness and related dispositions brings corresponding strengths.
After the passage on karma and life’s end, friendliness and related dispositions become the objects of samyama. The first pada also mentioned friendliness, compassion, gladness and equanimity.
Balani is plural, suggesting strengths corresponding to these dispositions. Strength here is not restricted to muscular force.
Samyama on strengths brings the strength of an elephant and similar powers.
Following the strengths of friendliness and related dispositions, this sutra takes strength itself as the object. Elephant strength is its example.
Elephant strength belongs to the traditional account of siddhis. Treating it merely as confidence, or as a guaranteed method of increasing bodily force, would go beyond the text.
Directing the light of cognition yields knowledge of what is subtle, concealed behind an obstruction, or far away.
After strength, the text turns to directing a light of cognition. Subtle, obstructed and distant objects are distinguished as three kinds beyond ordinary reach.
Aloka is a light within the contemplative discussion; no external lighting device is specified. Its extraordinary claim is retained without identifying it with a modern remote-viewing technology.
Samyama on the sun yields knowledge of the worlds.
After subtle and distant objects, the sun becomes the object of samyama. The moon and the pole star follow.
Bhuvana means worlds or realms, not simply a list of modern planets. This brief reference to samyama on the sun gives no instruction to gaze at the sun.
Samyama on the moon yields knowledge of the arrangement of the stars.
After linking the sun with knowledge of worlds, the text links the moon with the arrangement of stars. The next sutra concerns the pole star and their movement.
Vyuha means an ordered arrangement. The sutra states a fruit within its traditional cosmological setting rather than a procedure for modern astronomical measurement.
Samyama on the pole star yields knowledge of the movement of those stars.
After the arrangement of stars in the preceding sutra, this one addresses their movement. The reference of tat is understood from that stellar context.
The pole star’s apparently fixed position forms the background of this traditional statement. It concerns knowledge of celestial movement, not merely a metaphor for mental steadiness.
Samyama on the navel centre yields knowledge of the body’s arrangement.
From worlds and stars, the discussion now turns to the body’s organization. The navel centre is designated as the field for this knowledge.
Kaya-vyuha concerns the organized constitution of the body. The navel centre is not equated without further evidence with a modern anatomical organ or diagnostic method.
Samyama on the hollow of the throat brings cessation of hunger and thirst.
After knowledge of bodily organization, the text states a siddhi associated with the throat hollow. It belongs to the same list of extraordinary fruits of samyama.
Nivritti states cessation of hunger and thirst, not merely distraction from them. This is neither advice to stop eating or drinking nor a guarantee that bodily needs disappear.
Samyama on the kurma channel brings steadiness.
After the throat hollow, the text names a subtle locus called the kurma channel. It states steadiness as the fruit without giving a detailed account of its location.
Kurma-nadi belongs to the vocabulary of traditional yogic physiology. The sutra does not identify it definitively with a modern nerve or specify a physical technique.
Samyama on the light at the head yields a vision of perfected beings.
After steadiness through the kurma channel, this sutra concerns the light at the head and the vision of perfected beings. The next introduces an alternative through intuitive illumination.
Siddha here refers to perfected beings, not simply to a successful idea. Their vision is an extraordinary claim within the tradition, not a promised experience.
Or all may be known through intuitive illumination.
Amid the fruits of samyama on particular objects, this sutra offers pratibha as an alternative. The scope of ‘all’ belongs to this broad discussion of knowledge.
Pratibha denotes an illuminating intuition, not an ordinary guess or proof that every feeling is true. The sutra states its breadth without supplying a new step-by-step method here.
Samyama on the heart yields knowledge of the mind.
After the broad statement on intuitive knowing, another particular object is given. The heart is associated with knowledge of the mind.
Samvit signifies knowing or awareness. Heart here is not reduced to a modern cardiac examination or merely to sentiment.
Although sattva and purusha are entirely unmixed, experience arises from failing to distinguish them in cognition. Sattva serves another; samyama on what is for itself yields knowledge of purusha.
From knowledge of the mind, the discussion turns to the fundamental distinction between mental sattva and purusha. The following extraordinary experiences are presented as fruits of this knowing.
Sattva here refers to the lucid mind, while purusha is the seer. Experience presents them without distinction; knowledge of purusha does not mean making them one substance.
From that arise intuitive illumination and extraordinary experiences of hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell.
This lists experiences arising in the context of the preceding knowledge of purusha. The very next sutra reassesses them from the standpoint of samadhi.
Vedana here concerns tactile experience, while varta refers to smell. The following warning prevents treating this list of powers as final evidence of liberation.
Those experiences are impediments in samadhi, though powers in the outwardly active state.
This caution immediately follows the list of intuitive and extraordinary sensory experiences. The pada’s powers must be read alongside its concern with samadhi and kaivalya.
The same attainment can count as a power in outward activity yet obstruct samadhi. Fascination with it can redirect the course of practice.
Through loosening the cause of bondage and knowing the mind’s course, the mind can enter another body.
The list continues even after the warning about attraction to powers. Here the text states the traditional claim of entering another body.
Avesha is a philosophical claim of entry into another body, not merely a metaphor for empathy. The brief references to bondage and the mind’s course do not provide a method for influencing anyone.
Mastery of udana brings non-contact with water, mud, thorns and the like, and upward departure or ascent.
After entry into another body, the text names powers associated with udana, a function of prana. The next sutra states the fruit of mastering samana.
Non-contact is an extraordinary claim of remaining unattached to such obstacles. Utkranti can indicate ascent or departure from the body; it is not assurance of physical safety in dangerous conditions.
Mastery of samana brings blazing radiance.
Samana follows udana in the sequence of powers associated with prana. The sutra names its fruit only as jvalana.
Jvalana carries the sense of blazing or luminosity. It is not expanded into a specific body temperature, digestive treatment or modern energy mechanism.
Samyama on the relationship between hearing and space yields divine hearing.
After the prana-related fruits, the relationship between a sense and space is considered. Hearing is followed by the relationship between body and space.
Divine hearing is a traditional siddhi beyond ordinary hearing. The connection between shrotra and akasha belongs to the text’s account of elements, not merely a modern description of sound waves.
Samyama on the relationship between body and space, together with absorption in light cotton, yields movement through space.
After the relationship of hearing to space, the text turns to body and space. Absorption in light cotton is joined to this particular siddhi.
Samapatti is the term for absorptive identification introduced in the first pada. Movement through space is not reduced to feeling light, nor is it an instruction to fly or jump from a height.
An unimagined mental activity outside the body is the great bodiless state. From it comes the destruction of the covering over illumination.
After the power concerning body and space, the text names the state of maha-videha. Its fruit is connected with removing the covering over illumination.
Akalpita distinguishes this from merely imagining oneself outside the body. It is a subtle state in the text’s philosophy, not ordinary daydreaming or an exercise for leaving the body.
Samyama on the elements’ gross form, essential character, subtle aspect, connectedness and purpose yields mastery over the elements.
After maha-videha comes samyama on five aspects of the elements. The next sutra unfolds its fruits as animan and other powers.
Bhuta here means the elements of the yoga-samkhya account, not ghosts. Arthavattva concerns their purpose, while anvaya concerns their underlying connection or continuity.
From that arise minuteness and the other powers, bodily excellence, and freedom from obstruction by the properties of the elements.
The fruits of mastery over the elements are listed here. The following sutra specifies the qualities of bodily excellence.
Animan is the traditional power of becoming minute; ‘and the others’ points beyond it without listing them here. Non-obstruction by elemental properties is not a guarantee of bodily invulnerability.
Bodily excellence consists of fine form, grace, strength and a constitution as firm as a thunderbolt.
The bodily excellence named in the preceding sutra is now described through four qualities. The discussion next turns to mastery of the senses.
Vajra-samhananatva is a traditional description of an exceptionally firm constitution. These are excellences named in the text, not advertised outcomes of a class or session.
Samyama on the senses’ apprehension, essential character, I-am-ness, connectedness and purpose yields mastery of the senses.
As five aspects of the elements were considered, five aspects of the senses are now taken up. The next sutra gives the fruits of this mastery.
Grahana is the senses’ apprehending activity; asmita is a technical reference to their I-am-related basis. Mastery of the senses is not reduced here to suppressing desires.
From that come speed like the mind’s, independence from the sensory instruments, and mastery over primordial nature.
This states three fruits of the preceding mastery of the senses. The reference to pradhana extends the discussion to the primordial basis of nature.
Vikarana-bhava traditionally indicates functioning beyond ordinary dependence on sensory instruments. Pradhana means primordial nature in yoga-samkhya, not an important person.
For one whose discernment is solely of the difference between sattva and purusha, there are sovereignty over all states of being and all-knowingness.
Beyond mastery of the senses, the text returns to discernment of the difference between sattva and purusha. The next sutra calls for dispassion even toward these comprehensive attainments.
Sovereignty and all-knowingness are extraordinary philosophical claims of the text. They do not become a social licence to dominate others or proof that every statement by a practitioner is true.
Through dispassion even toward that attainment, the seed of defect is exhausted and kaivalya follows.
The preceding all-knowingness and sovereignty are not treated as the final goal. Dispassion even toward them clarifies the movement toward kaivalya.
Dispassion entails not making the attainment a basis of identification or grasping. Kaivalya is not presented here as merely an even more impressive power.
When invited by beings of higher stations, one should neither become attached nor proud, for there is the risk of renewed misfortune.
After dispassion toward powers comes a warning about invitations from higher realms. It belongs to the same traditional cosmological and contemplative setting.
Smaya here is pride in one’s distinction, not simply surprise. The sutra sees a danger of renewed attachment even in attractive spiritual honours.
Samyama on a moment and its sequence yields knowledge born of discrimination.
After detachment from powers and invitations, the closing sutras develop discriminative knowledge. Here its object is the moment and the sequence of moments.
Viveka is clear discrimination of subtle differences. This is philosophical samyama on moment and sequence, not simply clock-watching or time-management advice.
Through that knowledge, even two similar things can be distinguished when kind, characteristic and location do not delimit their difference.
An example of the capacity of knowledge born from moment and sequence is given. Difference is said to be known even without the usual identifying distinctions.
Jati here means kind or class, not social caste. Even when features and location do not distinguish two things, the passage attributes discriminative knowledge of their difference.
Knowledge born of discrimination carries one across, encompasses every object in every aspect, and is nonsequential.
After the example of distinguishing similar things, the text describes the comprehensive character of discriminative knowledge. The final sutra gives its culmination in relation to kaivalya.
Taraka means carrying across, while akrama indicates knowing unlike the sequential grasping of objects one by one. This is a claim within the text’s account of knowledge, not a description of a modern information system.
When sattva and purusha are equal in purity, there is kaivalya.
The Vibhuti Pada ends with sattva, purusha and kaivalya. The fourth pada will continue the examination of kaivalya.
Equality in purity does not say that sattva and purusha merge into one substance. In keeping with the preceding discrimination, it points toward purity of mind without remaining confusion with purusha.
Context
After the first five limbs of eightfold yoga, this pada clarifies dharana, dhyana and samadhi. It begins by defining dharana.
Simple explanation
Desha can mean a chosen field of attention, not only a geographical location. Dharana keeps the mind within that selected field.
