Sutra 1.1
English meaning
Now begins the exposition of the discipline of yoga.
Now begins the exposition of the discipline of yoga.
Yoga is the stilling of the activities of the mind. It is the restraint through which the mind’s changing forms settle into stillness.
After the opening announcement of yoga as a discipline, this sutra gives its definition. The next sutras distinguish the seer resting in its own nature from taking the form of mental activities; practice and dispassion are introduced at 1.12.
The following sutras include cognition, imagination, sleep and memory among the mind’s activities. The definition thus concerns the mind’s whole changing pattern and can be understood alongside the later discussion of practice.
Then the seer rests in its own nature.
After defining yoga, this describes the condition when the mind’s activities are stilled.
‘Then’ refers to the preceding sutra. Distinguishing the seer from the mind’s changing forms prepares for the contrast that follows.
At other times, the seer takes on the likeness of the mind’s activities.
Identification with mental activity is contrasted with resting in one’s own nature.
A form of experience can seem so completely one’s own that the difference between it and the one who sees is obscured.
The mind’s activities are of five kinds, and may be afflictive or non-afflictive.
After describing identification with mental activity, the text begins classifying those activities.
Not every mental activity is called harmful in the same way. Its kind and its relation to affliction are distinct questions.
They are valid cognition, mistaken cognition, conceptual construction, sleep, and memory.
The five kinds announced in the preceding sutra are named here.
The list includes sleep and memory as well as thinking. ‘Mental activity’ therefore has a broad scope here.
Direct perception, inference, and received testimony are means of valid cognition.
Valid cognition, the first of the five activities, is considered first.
Seeing directly, drawing an inference, and learning through reliable testimony are distinguished as ways of knowing.
Mistaken cognition is false knowledge not grounded in the thing’s actual form.
After valid cognition comes the identification of mistaken cognition.
The presence of a belief does not establish its truth; it must correspond to what it claims to know.
Conceptual construction follows knowledge conveyed by words while lacking a corresponding object.
After error, conceptual construction is explained through the distinction between words and objects.
Words can construct a meaningful form even without a corresponding object. Such construction therefore differs from knowing an object directly.
Sleep is the mental activity supported by a cognition of absence.
Sleep, the fourth item in the list, is now defined.
Sleep is not excluded from the account of mental activities. Its support is distinguished from a clearly presented waking object.
Memory is the non-loss of an object that has been experienced.
The definitions of the five mental activities conclude with memory.
Memory refers back to prior experience. Knowing something and retaining it for recollection are distinguishable processes.
Those activities are stilled through practice and dispassion.
After examining the activities, the text gives two supports for their stilling.
Practice and dispassion are paired: effort alone or simply letting go does not exhaust the statement.
Practice is the effort to remain in that steadiness.
Practice, the first of the two supports just named, is explained.
Practice is not described merely as mechanical repetition; steadiness is the direction of the effort.
That practice becomes firmly grounded when cultivated for a long time, without interruption, and with care and respect.
After defining practice, the text describes how it becomes firmly established.
Duration, continuity, and respectful care all matter. This is not a promise of results within a fixed number of days.
Dispassion is the mastery of one who no longer thirsts for objects experienced directly or heard of through tradition.
Dispassion, the second support paired with practice, is now defined.
Desire is not confined to things presently seen; promised or reported rewards can also become objects of attachment.
Beyond that is dispassion arising from discernment of purusha, in which thirst even for the qualities ceases.
A further dispassion is distinguished through the discernment of purusha.
This is more than exchanging one object for another; it concerns release from attraction even to nature’s qualities.
Samadhi that proceeds with forms of deliberation, subtle consideration, joy, and I-am-ness is called samprajnata.
After practice and dispassion, the discussion turns to forms of samadhi.
This state involves an identifiable form of cognition or experience. The next sutra distinguishes another condition.
The other samadhi is preceded by practice of the cognition of cessation; latent impressions alone remain.
After samprajnata, another condition with latent impressions remaining is briefly indicated.
The cessation of manifest activity is distinguished from the disappearance of all latent impressions. ‘Impressions remaining’ preserves that difference.
For the bodiless and those dissolved into prakriti, this condition rests on their mode of existence.
This mentions the conditions called bodiless and dissolved into prakriti; the next sutra considers other practitioners.
This is a compact classification, not a test for identifying the state of a living individual. The terms belong to the text’s technical setting.
For others, faith, energy, recollection, samadhi, and discernment precede it.
The discussion moves from the preceding special categories to the supports available to others.
Trust, energetic effort, and recollection are connected with collected attention and insight. The sutra does not turn them into a recipe for instant results.
Attainment is near for those with intense commitment.
After the supports for practice, differences in its intensity are considered.
Intensity concerns earnest commitment to the aim; it should not be confused with physical force or impatience.
Even there, distinctions remain according to whether the intensity is mild, moderate, or very strong.
After intense commitment, the text distinguishes degrees within it.
Rather than assuming identical commitment in every practitioner, the text acknowledges differences of degree.
Or through dedication to Ishvara.
‘Or’ introduces dedication to Ishvara alongside the preceding supports.
Dedication directs oneself toward a highest support. The next sutra specifies what Ishvara means here.
Ishvara is a distinct purusha, untouched by afflictions, action, its ripening, and the latent deposits of action.
After introducing dedication to Ishvara, the text defines Ishvara’s distinguishing character.
The distinction concerns being untouched by affliction and karmic conditioning. The sutra itself does not assign a role of creating the world.
In Ishvara, the seed of all-knowing is unsurpassed.
After the definition of Ishvara, unsurpassed knowing is indicated.
‘There’ refers to Ishvara in the preceding sutra. It is not an automatic claim that a practitioner has become all-knowing.
Not being limited by time, Ishvara is teacher even of those who came before.
Ishvara’s role as teacher is connected with not being circumscribed by time.
‘Those who came before’ remains unspecified; no historical teacher or date is named here.
The pranava is the expression that signifies Ishvara.
The discussion moves from Ishvara’s character to the expression that signifies him.
Pranava is understood here as Om. The next sutra connects the expression and its meaning with practice.
Its repetition is accompanied by contemplation of its meaning.
The pranava just identified is connected with repetition and contemplation of meaning.
Repeating a sound alone does not exhaust the statement; attention to meaning accompanies it. No fixed count or duration is specified.
From that come recognition of inward consciousness and the absence of obstacles.
After repetition and contemplation of meaning, their result is stated within the context of yoga.
The focus is inward consciousness and obstacles to the discipline. The following sutras distinguish those obstacles.
Illness, mental stagnation, doubt, heedlessness, laziness, inability to disengage, mistaken vision, failure to attain a stage, and inability to remain established are distractions of the mind and obstacles.
After mentioning the absence of obstacles, the text lists nine of them.
The list spans illness, judgment, and difficulties in steadiness. It does not by itself constitute a medical diagnosis of an individual.
Pain, dejection, bodily trembling, and disturbed inhalation and exhalation accompany distraction.
After listing obstacles, the text describes conditions accompanying distraction.
‘Accompanying’ states an association, not a single cause for every case. The sutra does not prescribe breath-holding or a method of curing illness.
Practice of a single principle is directed toward countering those obstacles.
After obstacles and their accompaniments, a support of focused practice is given.
‘A single principle’ points toward one direction rather than continual scattering. Several possible supports follow.
The mind becomes clear through cultivating friendliness toward happiness, compassion toward suffering, gladness toward virtue, and equanimity toward non-virtue.
Among supports for steadiness, this sutra gives a place to the direction of feeling in relation to others.
Four attitudes are paired with four situations. Equanimity is not indifference toward someone suffering; compassion is specified for suffering.
Or clarity of mind comes through the release and retention of breath.
Among further supports for mental clarity, breath is briefly mentioned.
The sutra names release and retention but gives no operational pace, duration, or force. It is not turned here into a technique for forced breathing.
Or an object-bearing experience, when it arises, supports the steadiness of the mind.
After the reference to breath, another possible support for steadiness is introduced.
The sutra relates an arising experience to its support for steadiness. It does not provide a procedure for producing a particular sensation.
Or a sorrowless, luminous experience supports that steadiness.
This is another brief alternative continuing the preceding account of experience.
‘Luminous’ may be understood as describing clarity of experience. No treatment for depression or guarantee of removing every grief is asserted.
Or the mind may take as its object one who is free from attachment.
Among supports for steadiness, the object is now connected with dispassion.
The character of what attention turns toward matters. Here it is directed toward an example free from attachment.
Or by taking knowledge associated with dream and sleep as a support.
Knowledge associated with dream and sleep is now offered as a possible support.
The sutra does not make a dream a prediction or proof of an external event. Its subject is a support for the mind.
Or through meditation on an object one finds suitable.
After several alternatives, room is allowed for a support suited to the practitioner.
This flexibility gives weight to the suitability of the object. No single outward form is made compulsory for everyone.
Its mastery extends from the smallest particle to the greatest magnitude.
After the supports for meditation, the range available to the collected mind is described.
Both the minute and the vast can become objects of attention. No procedure for physically controlling objects is given here.
When its activities have subsided, the mind, like a clear gem, rests in and takes on the colouring of the knower, the means of knowing, or the known; this is samapatti.
The clear-gem comparison now explains the collected mind’s samapatti.
A clear gem takes on the colour before it without its own clouding. The image concerns a mind revealing its object when its own disturbances diminish.
Within this, samapatti mingled with conceptual distinctions of word, object, and knowledge is savitarka.
After defining samapatti, the first distinction is savitarka.
Taking an object together with its name and associated knowledge produces the mixture described. The next sutra distinguishes a condition beyond that mixture.
When memory is purified, samapatti that seems empty of its own form and reveals the object alone is nirvitarka.
Nirvitarka is contrasted with the mixture of word, object, and knowledge in savitarka.
‘As though’ matters. The point is not the destruction of memory, but the object appearing without that admixture.
The same account also explains savichara and nirvichara samapatti, whose objects are subtle.
The distinctions just discussed are extended to subtle objects.
The earlier distinction is applied at a subtler level of object. This makes the relation clear without restating the entire definition.
The range of subtle objects culminates in alinga, the unmanifest.
After subtle objects, the text indicates the limit of their range.
‘Alinga’ means that which lacks a manifest mark, read here in the technical sense of unmanifest prakriti.
These are samadhi with seed.
The samapattis just described are now grouped under a common designation.
‘With seed’ indicates that a support or seed remains. The later account of seedless samadhi will distinguish it.
With proficiency in nirvichara comes inward clarity and serenity.
The result of maturity in nirvichara is now described within the account of seeded samadhi.
Prasada here concerns inward lucidity, not an external reward or freedom from physical illness.
In that condition, insight is ritambhara: bearing truth.
After inward clarity, the character of the insight arising there is stated.
‘There’ restricts the claim to this contemplative context. Merely giving a personal belief this name does not establish it as true.
Its object differs from knowledge gained through hearing or inference, because it concerns the particular.
Ritambhara insight is now compared with forms of valid cognition named earlier.
This does not dismiss hearing or inference as useless. It distinguishes their general knowledge from the particular directly apprehended here.
The latent impression born of that insight inhibits other latent impressions.
After that distinctive insight, the effect of the impression it produces is described.
‘Born of that’ refers to the preceding insight. It is not an instruction to erase memories or forcibly suppress a thought.
When even that impression is stilled, the stilling of all gives rise to seedless samadhi.
The Samadhi Pada ends with seedless samadhi, beyond even the special impression just described.
What previously helped inhibit other impressions is not made into a final attachment. ‘Even’ marks this further distinction.
Context
This opens the Samadhi Pada and the Yoga Sutra as a whole.
Simple explanation
‘Discipline’ signals an ordered teaching and practice; the next sutra states what yoga means here.
