English meaning
“Gautama, that world above is a fire. The sun is its fuel; the rays are its smoke; day is its flame; the directions are its embers; the intermediate directions are its sparks. In this fire the gods offer faith. From that offering King Soma arises.”
Explanation
Fuel, smoke, flame, embers and sparks are five components of the fire image. The structure of sacrifice is mapped onto cosmic elements; this is not an account of physical combustion.
Context
The first level of the five-fire teaching is the heavenly world, with the first transformation running from faith to Soma.
