English meaning
“But those who win worlds through sacrifice, giving and austerity reach smoke; from smoke, night; from night, the waning fortnight; from that fortnight, the six months during which the sun travels south; from those months, the world of the ancestors; from that world, the moon. Reaching the moon, they become food. There the gods consume them as they consume King Soma, as though saying, ‘Increase; diminish.’ When that reward is exhausted, they emerge into this very space; from space into wind; from wind into rain; from rain into earth. Reaching earth, they become food. They are offered again into the fire that is a man, and then are born in the fire that is a woman. Rising again toward the worlds, they keep revolving in this way. Those who know neither of these paths become crawling insects, flying insects, and such biting creatures.”
Explanation
The two states of being food are distinct: food of the gods on the moon and edible food on earth. Sacrificial language reconnects the cycle to birth through man and woman. This is a religious account of action and rebirth, not a contemporary measure of the worth of people or animals.
Context
The ascent along the ancestral path and the descent to rebirth complete this brahmana. The ending names forms of life outside both routes.
