English meaning
His father said, “My child, understand this about us: whatever I knew, I told you in full. Come, let us go there; on arriving, we shall both live as students.” Shvetaketu answered, “You alone should go.” Gautama then came to the place where Pravahana Jaivali held court. The king had a seat brought for him, had water brought, and offered him the ceremonial welcome. He said, “We grant the venerable Gautama a boon.”
Explanation
The dual vatsyavah first includes father and son together, although the father subsequently goes alone. Seat, water and ceremonial welcome are separate acts of hospitality.
Context
The father acknowledges the limits of his knowledge and goes to learn. Gautama is his lineage designation.
