English meaning
Then breath was about to depart. Just as a great, excellent horse from Sindhu might uproot the pegs securing its feet, so it pulled these vital powers from their places. They said, “Venerable one, do not depart. We shall not be able to live without you.” Breath replied, “Then pay tribute to me.” They answered, “So be it.”
Explanation
The Sindhu horse and its tethering pegs picture collective dependence. Bali here means tribute or an honorific offering; the faculties will next yield their qualities to breath.
Context
The test of breath differs from the first five departures: merely preparing to leave disturbs every other faculty.
