English meaning
These two ears are Gotama and Bharadvaja: this one is Gotama and this one Bharadvaja. These two eyes are Vishvamitra and Jamadagni: this one is Vishvamitra and this one Jamadagni. These two nostrils are Vasishtha and Kashyapa: this one is Vasishtha and this one Kashyapa. Speech is Atri, for food is eaten through the mouth associated with speech. What is called Atri is here explained by the name Atti, “the eater.” One who knows this becomes the eater of all; everything becomes food for that person.
Explanation
Ears, eyes and nostrils are the traditional referents of “these two”; the original does not repeat the organ names. The relation between Atri and Atti is Vedic interpretive wordplay, not modern linguistic etymology. Everything becoming food is an expansive image of experience and nourishment, not advice to eat anything indiscriminately.
Context
The seer image is developed by assigning seers’ names to paired organs of the head and to speech.
