English meaning
Yajnavalkya replied, “He surely said that they went where performers of the horse sacrifice go.” “Where do those sacrificers go?” “This world extends thirty-two day-journeys of the divine chariot. Around it lies earth twice that extent, and around that earth an ocean twice its extent. The intervening opening is as fine as a razor’s edge or a fly’s wing. There an Indra-associated power, becoming a bird, handed them to wind. Wind received them into itself and brought them where the horse-sacrificers were. In this way that gandharva praised wind itself. Wind is therefore the differentiated whole and wind the collective whole. One who knows this overcomes repeated death.” Bhujyu Lahyayani then fell silent.
Context
The answer moves beyond the worlds’ boundary to the integrating power of wind.
Explanation
The divine chariot’s journey is a unit within ancient cosmography, not modern astronomy. Aindra is interpreted in relation to ritual fire/Indra and the bird-shaped altar; it should not be silently reduced to an ordinary bird.
