दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे । देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ॥१७-२०॥

अन्वय
दातव्यम् इति यत् दानम् अनुपकारिणे देशे काले च पात्रे च दीयते, तत् दानम् सात्त्विकम् स्मृतम् [अस्ति] ।
हिन्दी अर्थ
‘देना उचित है’ यह मानकर, बदले में उपकार न करने वाले को, उचित स्थान और समय पर तथा योग्य पात्र को दिया गया दान सात्त्विक माना जाता है।

Giving is regarded as sattvic when one gives because giving is right, at a suitable place and time, to a fitting recipient who will not repay the favour.
