Passage 1.7
English meaning
A brahmana guest enters a household like Vaishvanara fire. This is how that fire is appeased: “Son of Vivasvan, bring water.”
Explanation
Vaivasvata addresses Yama as Vivasvan’s son. Identifying the guest with fire expresses the religious seriousness of hospitality, with water part of the welcome. The historical specification of a brahmana guest is retained, not converted into a modern ranking of people by birth.
Context
The narrative turns to the duties owed to a guest arriving in Death’s household.
