पीतोदका जग्धतृणा दुग्धदोहा निरिन्द्रियाः । अनन्दा नाम ते लोकास्तान् स गच्छति ता ददत् ॥ ३ ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
ये गायें पानी पी चुकने, घास खा चुकने और दूध दे चुकने की अवस्था में हैं; उनकी शक्तियाँ चुक गई हैं। ऐसी गायें दान देने वाला उन लोकों में जाता है जिन्हें आनन्दरहित कहा जाता है।
English meaning
These cows have finished their drinking and grazing, their milk has been exhausted, and their powers are spent. Whoever gives such cows goes to the realms described as joyless.
व्याख्या
इन विशेषणों का संयुक्त आशय केवल अभी-अभी पानी पीना नहीं, जीवन की उपयोगी शक्तियों का चुक जाना है। पाठ दान की संख्या के बजाय प्राप्तकर्ता के लिए उसकी उपयोगिता पर प्रश्न उठाता है। आनन्दरहित लोक का फल कथा की धार्मिक दृष्टि है, आधुनिक भविष्यवाणी नहीं।
