बहूनामेमि प्रथमो बहूनामेमि मध्यमः । किँ स्विद्यमस्य कर्तव्यं यन्मयाऽद्य करिष्यति ॥ ५ ॥

English meaning
Among many I go in the first rank, and among many in the middle. What purpose could Yama have that he will accomplish through me today?

Explanation
The contrast between first and middle concerns his standing rather than declaring him worthless. His question about Yama’s purpose remains open and propels the story. It need not be read either as an absolute boast or as a wish to die.
