कामस्याप्तिं जगतः प्रतिष्ठां क्रतोरानन्त्यमभयस्य पारम् । स्तोममहदुरुगायं प्रतिष्ठां दृष्ट्वा धृत्या धीरो नचिकेतोऽत्यस्राक्षीः ॥ ११ ॥

हे धीर नचिकेता, कामनाओं की पूर्ति, जगत का आधार, यज्ञ के विस्तारयुक्त फल, अभय की सीमा और अत्यन्त प्रशंसनीय महान् विस्तृत पद को देखकर भी तुमने धैर्य से छोड़ दिया।
English meaning
Resolute Nachiketas, you saw the fulfilment of desires, the world’s support, the vast reward of sacrifice, the farthest security and a magnificent, widely praised station, yet firmly relinquished them.
व्याख्या
कई उच्च विशेषण भी यहाँ त्याज्य प्राप्ति का वर्णन करते हैं। उनके अनन्त या अभय होने को पूर्ण मुक्ति की अंतिम परिभाषा मान लेने से प्रशंसा का आशय उलट जाएगा; वे साधन-साध्य क्षेत्र में रखे गए हैं।
Explanation
Even the elevated descriptions concern an attainment relinquished by Nachiketas. Treating its infinity or security as the final definition of liberation would reverse the point: this achievement still belongs to the realm of means and results.
