जानाम्यहं शेवधिरित्यनित्यं न ह्यध्रुवैः प्राप्यते हि ध्रुवं तत् । ततो मया नाचिकेतश्चितोऽग्निः अनित्यैर्द्रव्यैः प्राप्तवानस्मि नित्यम् ॥ १० ॥

हिन्दी अर्थ
मैं जानता हूँ कि कर्मफल का यह खजाना अनित्य है, क्योंकि अस्थिर साधनों से वह नित्य प्राप्त नहीं होता। फिर भी मैंने अनित्य सामग्रियों से नाचिकेत अग्नि का चयन किया और अपेक्षाकृत स्थायी पद पाया।
English meaning
I know that the treasure of ritual reward is impermanent, for the enduring cannot be gained through unstable means. Nevertheless, with impermanent materials I built the Nachiketa fire and obtained a comparatively lasting station.
व्याख्या
नित्यम् यहाँ पिछले ध्रुवम् से तनाव रखता है। परम्परागत समाधान यम के पद को सापेक्ष दीर्घस्थायित्व मानता है, परम आत्मा की निरपेक्ष नित्यता नहीं; अनुवाद उस भेद को खुला बताता है।
Explanation
The final “lasting” stands in tension with the statement that the eternal cannot be produced. A traditional resolution makes Yama’s station relatively enduring rather than absolutely eternal, and the rendering states that interpretation explicitly.
