English meaning
Some thinkers name inherent nature as the cause, and others time, but the verse calls them mistaken. It is the greatness of the divine at work in the world that sets this wheel of brahman turning.
Context
The final chapter returns to the opening question: what ultimately accounts for the movement of the world?
Explanation
The verse need not deny the experience of natural processes or time; it rejects their sufficiency as ultimate explanation. The wheel pictures the recurring movement of world and embodied life. Calling that movement divine greatness presents it as an expression of the presiding reality’s power.
Passage 6.2
English meaning
The one who always encompasses everything is knowing, the maker of time, endowed with qualities, and all-knowing. Under that one’s direction the world of effects unfolds in varied forms, to be contemplated as earth, water, fire, air, and space.
Context
Instead of treating time as an independent first cause, the verse places time and the five elements under an encompassing source.
Explanation
Karma here can mean a produced effect or the manifested world, not only morally consequential action. The five-element compound supplies the text’s traditional account of the world, not a modern periodic table. Having powers or qualities need not mean being bound by nature’s qualities, a distinction important for the later description nirguṇa.
English meaning
Having brought that work into being and drawn it back again, there is a joining of one principle with another: through one, two, three, or eight, and also through time and the subtle qualities associated with the self.
Context
After the five elements, this compressed verse indicates the conjunction of causes and principles through a numerical sequence.
Explanation
The verse does not itself identify the sets of one, two, three, and eight. One interpretation connects them with ignorance, a pair of karmic alternatives, the three qualities, and eight forms of nature, but that is not the only possible scheme. The force of vinivartya and the implied agent also require interpretation.
Passage 6.4
English meaning
The one who initiates activities shaped by the qualities also orders the various states of being. When those states are absent, the produced work comes to an end; when activity is exhausted, that one passes beyond, being in reality other than it.
Context
The conjunction of principles is followed by the ending of their activity and the distinction of its underlying reality.
Explanation
This difficult sentence can be read in relation to cosmic activity subsiding or to a practitioner’s release from karmic involvement. The rendering foregrounds the distinction between activity and a reality other than it, without importing a whole commentary’s system. The destination of yāti is not expressly stated.
Passage 6.5
English meaning
That one is the beginning, the underlying cause of the conditions for conjunction, beyond past, present, and future, and understood as without constituent parts. First contemplate that praiseworthy divine reality within your own mind, whose form embraces the universe and grounds existence.
Context
The search for the cause distinct from its effects now identifies the place of contemplation: the worshipper’s own mind.
Explanation
Being beyond the three times is not simply being very ancient; it expresses independence from temporal succession. Universal form and absence of parts must be read together as manifestation and undivided ground. The wording “having first contemplated” continues into the next verse’s language of knowing.
Passage 6.6
English meaning
That reality is beyond and other than the cosmic tree, time, and forms; from it this manifold world takes its course. Know it as bringing righteousness, dispelling wrongdoing, possessing sovereignty, abiding within the self, deathless, and the dwelling place of all.
Context
The preceding contemplation develops into recognition of a ground beyond worldly forms yet present within the self.
Explanation
The tree is taken as an image of the branching structure of worldly existence, not as the name of a botanical species. The manifold world proceeds from that reality while the reality remains other than its forms. Dependence of manifestation and independence of its ground are held together, without dropping the ethical language of righteousness and wrongdoing.
Passage 6.7
English meaning
Let us know that divine one: the supreme great Lord over rulers, the highest divinity of the gods, the foremost master of masters, beyond all, lord of the worlds and worthy of praise.
Context
The tone shifts from description to a collective aspiration to know the highest presiding reality.
Explanation
The successive terms rulers, gods, and masters prevent any limited rank of power from becoming ultimate. Maheśvara is presented not merely as a stronger rival but as the highest ground of limited authority. The wish to know joins inquiry to praise.
Passage 6.8
English meaning
No task or instrument is required by that reality, and no equal or superior to it is seen. Its supreme power is spoken of in many forms; knowledge, strength, and action belong to it intrinsically.
Context
The claim of supreme sovereignty is explained through power that does not depend on external equipment.
Explanation
Kārya and karaṇa can be read as task and instrument, or in some interpretations as body and organs. The point is not that nothing happens in the world, but that the ultimate cause does not depend on tools as a finite agent does. The diversity of power is paired with its intrinsic character.
Passage 6.9
English meaning
No master or ruler stands over it in the world, nor is there a defining mark that confines it. It is the cause and the ruler even of those who preside over the faculties; it has neither a progenitor nor an overlord.
Context
Independence from instruments is followed by independence from an external originator, ruler, or defining indicator.
Explanation
Liṅga here concerns a sign or identifying indicator; importing the name of a particular religious icon without contextual argument would be misleading. The compound karaṇādhipādhipa places the ultimate ground beyond both faculties and those who preside over them.
Passage 6.10
English meaning
As a spider surrounds itself with its threads, the one divine reality naturally envelops itself in strands arising from primordial nature. May that one grant us entry into Brahman.
Context
The relation of the single cause to nature is pictured again through a web, now leading into prayer.
Explanation
The strands born from pradhāna represent nature’s manifestations. Their covering suggests that visible multiplicity can conceal its ground, not that the ground is destroyed. Brahmāpyaya is rendered as entry or resolution into Brahman rather than as an ordinary spatial journey.
English meaning
One divine reality is hidden in all beings, pervading all and serving as the inner self of all. It oversees action, is the dwelling ground of every being, the witness and conscious knower, alone and beyond the qualities.
Context
The ground concealed by the web is described through inward presence, witnessing, and independence from the qualities.
Explanation
Witness and overseer point to awareness of action and its ordering, not simply to another finite experiencer. Nirguṇa is read here as beyond nature’s binding qualities. It should not be made to mean unconscious or morally deficient, which would conflict with the description as conscious knower.
English meaning
The one governs the many that lack independent power of action and makes a single seed manifold. The steady-minded who discern that one within themselves possess enduring happiness; others do not.
Context
The all-pervading witness is linked to the emergence of many from one and to the fruit of inward recognition.
Explanation
Calling the many niṣkriya need not make them absolutely lifeless; it is rendered as lacking independent originating power. A seed’s many forms allow unity without sameness. Enduring happiness is tied to recognizing the inward ground, rather than to a passing favourable circumstance.
Passage 6.13
English meaning
Eternal among the eternal and conscious among the conscious, the one provides the objects sought by the many. Knowing that divine cause, accessible through discerning knowledge and contemplative discipline, one is released from every bond.
Context
The ground of lasting inward happiness is connected to enduring consciousness and the paired means of knowledge and yoga.
Explanation
Sāṃkhya-yoga is rendered through discerning knowledge and contemplative practice without assuming that the verse contains the fully developed later philosophical systems. Providing the objects of desire is also not a promise that every personal wish will be immediately fulfilled.
Passage 6.14
English meaning
There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars, nor these flashes of lightning, much less this fire. Everything shines in the wake of that shining reality; by its radiance the whole world is made manifest.
Context
The language of a radiance beyond external lights illustrates the knowledge of the supreme cause.
Explanation
The physical operation of sun and fire is not being denied. They make objects visible, while the supreme radiance names the ground on which visibility and awareness themselves depend. Anubhāti expresses the derivative character of the other lights.
Passage 6.15
English meaning
One haṃsa is within this world, and that same reality is the fire lodged in the waters. By knowing it one crosses beyond death; no other path is given for reaching that goal.
Context
The radiance imagery moves through the haṃsa within the world and fire hidden in water toward knowledge that crosses death.
Explanation
Haṃsa evokes a bird and can also suggest the moving or all-pervading self; it is not treated as a zoological statement. The final line makes knowledge of this reality indispensable to the stated goal, rather than naming a modern community as the sole eligible group.
Passage 6.16
English meaning
It makes and knows the universe and has its source in itself: knowing, the time of time, endowed with qualities, and all-knowing. It is lord of primordial nature and the knower of the field, master of the qualities, and the cause of worldly existence, liberation, continuance, and bondage.
Context
The object of liberating knowledge is named in terms that encompass creation, nature, the individual knower, and release.
Explanation
Pradhāna names primordial nature, and kṣetrajña the knower of the field of experience. Calling the divine lord of both differs from making either one alone the ultimate cause. Including bondage and liberation together prevents the ultimate ground from being confined to one favourable state.
Passage 6.17
English meaning
That one is wholly of that reality, deathless and established in divine sovereignty: knowing, all-pervading, and guardian of this world. It rules this universe always; there is no other ground for that governance.
Context
The many descriptions of the preceding verse return to the unity of an enduring governor and guardian.
Explanation
The referent of tat in tanmayaḥ and the force of īśasaṃsthaḥ require interpretation: they can be read in terms of the Lord’s own established nature or of consciousness established in the Lord. The rendering follows the immediate language of cosmic guardianship without presenting one school’s resolution as final.
Passage 6.18
English meaning
Seeking liberation, I take refuge in that divine reality which brought Brahmā forth at the beginning, imparted the Vedas to him, and illumines understanding of the self.
Context
The account of the cosmic ruler becomes a first-person declaration of refuge.
Explanation
Brahmāṇam here refers to the creator Brahmā, not the neuter absolute Brahman. Imparting the Vedas and illuminating self-understanding connect transmitted teaching with inward recognition. The speaker’s declared aim is release, rather than a bargain for worldly gain.
English meaning
That reality is without parts or activity, peaceful, faultless, and unstained: the supreme bridge to deathlessness, like fire become still when its fuel has been consumed.
Context
The prayer for refuge is followed by a description of the peaceful, unstained nature of its object.
Explanation
The accusative descriptions continue the object of refuge in the preceding verse. Exhausted fuel pictures the cessation of activity, not the destruction of the ultimate ground. Setu can evoke a bridge, supporting embankment, or boundary; here the emphasis is the support for reaching deathlessness.
English meaning
Only when human beings can roll up the sky like a hide will suffering come to an end without knowing that divine reality.
Context
A forceful impossibility image connects the peaceful ground with the necessity of liberating knowledge.
Explanation
Rolling up the sky is an impossibility image, not a practice to attempt. The claim is that fundamental bondage cannot end while its ultimate ground remains unknown. This spiritual account of suffering does not invalidate medicine, care, or practical help.
English meaning
Then Śvetāśvatara, knowing Brahman through the power of disciplined practice and divine favour, taught that supremely purifying knowledge clearly to advanced renunciant practitioners; it was a teaching honoured by the community of seers.
Context
The closing frame identifies the teacher, the grounds of his realization, and the recipients of the teaching.
Explanation
Placing disciplined effort beside divine favour keeps practice and grace from becoming simple opposites. Atyāśramin is commonly understood as an advanced renunciant or one beyond the ordinary distinctions of life-stages; it is more specific than a generic resident of a hermitage.
Passage 6.22
English meaning
This highest secret at the culmination of the Veda was taught in ancient times. It is not to be passed on to one whose mind is unsettled, nor to someone outside the relationship of son or disciple.
Context
The account of transmission turns to readiness and responsibility in passing on the teaching.
Explanation
The text frames receptivity and a committed teaching relationship as conditions for instruction within its historical setting. The language of son and disciple is preserved rather than converted into a new hereditary restriction on modern readers. Vedānta here names the concluding or inward teaching of the Veda.
Passage 6.23
English meaning
For the great-hearted person whose devotion to the divine is supreme, and whose devotion to the teacher is of the same kind, the meanings taught here become clear.
Context
The Upanishad ends by connecting reverent receptivity toward the divine and the teacher with the illumination of meaning.
Explanation
Devotion expresses a commitment through which recited words become understood, rather than treating memorization alone as sufficient. The parallel devotion to divine and teacher does not by itself exempt a teacher from ethical accountability. The things that become luminous are the meanings: the teaching is meant to become intelligible.

Context
